Publisher's Summary

Little Willy has a big job to do. When his grandfather falls ill, it is up to Willy alone to save their farm from the tax collector. So he enters the National Dogsled Race, where he must beat the Indian Stone Fox and his five beautiful Samoyed dogs.
©1980, 1984 John Reynolds Gardiner; (P)2003, 2006 HarperCollins Publishers

Critic Reviews

"Gardiner's description of the race and sudden climax (based on legend) is fast-paced and enveloping." (School Library Journal)
"To B.D. Wong's credit, he narrates each of Gardiner's stories in a unique manner. For Stone Fox, Wong narrates with quiet reverence, respecting the power of the story and the bond among boy and dog and grandfather without imposing himself into the relationships." (AudioFile)

Would you listen to Stone Fox again? Why?

we would listen to stone fox again - in fact, we already have!

What other book might you compare Stone Fox to and why?

old yeller - because it is a timeless tale about a boy and his dog. story is very different, but at it's heart, it's very similar

Which character – as performed by B.D. Wong – was your favorite?

the main character - little Willy

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

much of the book moved us, but, of course the ending was very moving

Any additional comments?

this book is great for using with english/lit - great for examples of foreshadowing. . prompts great discussion at the end - such as 'so what happened next?'....

Story of Love and Dedication

Just FYI - this book has some adult topics. There is a depressed grandfather, taxes to be paid, and death. A young boy facing these difficulties on his own. It is a story of what one will do for another.
