Publisher's Summary

Socks is one happy cat. He lives with a nice young couple called the Brickers who play with him, pet him, feed him treats, and always have a warm lap for him to sit in. Then a new baby joins the family. Suddenly, the Brickers are sharing their laps and love with Charles William, and Socks is getting into all sorts of trouble. He runs from a phantom dog, wrestles with Nana's best wig, and fights Old Taylor the tomcat for territory. But as Charles William grows, Socks discovers that he has a new best friend and a new way to be part of the family.

A purr-fectly hilarious portrait of life with a baby from a cat's point of view.

Critic Reviews

"This is a hilarious book by Beverly Cleary...and Neil Patrick Harris does a slam-bang job of presenting it....Both children and adults will roar with laughter." (School Library Journal)
"Younger listeners (who may themselves feel misunderstood by the big people in their lives, especially after the arrival of a new sibling) will especially appreciate this perspective. Parents listening along will enjoy Cleary's sharp and humorous insights into family life." (AudioFile)

Sweet but slow story

Any additional comments?

The adults liked this one, but the 5 and 7 year old got bored!

Great listen for all

Really good book to listen to in the car with the family. My boys loved to hear this one over and over again. Great narration and, of course, great story about a cat and all his funny escapades in life from a kitten to the introduction of a new baby in the household.

My Daughter Loves This

What made the experience of listening to Socks the most enjoyable?

I got this book for my daughter mainly because she already had the Henry Huggins collection and fell in love with how Neil Patrick Harris reads it. He does a great job on this book too. My daughter is a big audio reader and she gives this a two thumbs up. Good story and great reader!

Great for kids or cat owners

Told from the kitty's point of view, Beverly Cleary really nailed the thoughts and emotions of a cat. Perfect for children with pets in the family, because by revealing that animals can have similar feelings, it helps them develop empathy for their furry friends. My guilty secret? I have to admit that, as a cat person, I love it too.

Socks does funny things

I am a 7 year old boy. I really liked listening to this book. It's about a cat named Socks and his owners sell him to another family and after a while the family has a baby and it's really funny after that.
