The word “Renaissance” means “rebirth” in French. It was first used by French historian Jules Michelet in 1858, to refer to a ‘movement’ which took place between about the 13th and 16th centuries. This movement describes the transition from medieval to modern Europe, so there are no exact dates for when it began or ended. The Renaissance began in Italy some time at the end of the 13th century and spread to other countries in Western Europe, such as France, Spain and England. The movement is called the “rebirth” because, during that period, Western Europe rediscovered literary, philosophical and artistic work from ancient Greece and Rome. From this inspiration, Renaissance scholars developed ideas which have shaped the modern world. Before the Renaissance, many classical works had not been thought about for a thousand years. During the Renaissance, scholars and artists turned to these works to inspire them.

Concise description of Renaissance

It's nice concise description of Renaissance. Though really short, it did give a snapshot of where Renaissance started and brief overview of what happened during the period of Renaissance. Wish it was a little more elaborate.

Fun Intro to the Renaissance Period

The word Renaissance comes from the French word meaning "rebirth". The Renaissance Period began in Florence, Italy and spread throughout Europe by the 16th century and had a wide influence in art, architecture, philosophy, literature, music and just about all aspects of life. Renaissance scholars focused on humanism in their teachings and employed human emotion in the study of art. Systems of banking and accounting began during the Renaissance. The lasting effect that the Renaissance period has had upon art particularly cannot be overestimated, when such artists as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli, Giotto and many others came out of this period. This five minute short is only the beginning of what you can learn about the Renaissance.
