Publisher's Summary

This is a charming, hankie-waving Christmas classic for girls who love horses, ages 8 and up.

Teased by the local kids for being a city girl and an amputee, Hannah Storey feels alone and isolated, just like the old mustang she sees on the way to and from school every day. Hannah vows to save the pony the local kids have cruelly nicknamed Frostbite from freezing to death or being sent to slaughter, but events spiral out of control.

Will Hannah be able to save the pony? Will the townsfolk of River Bend ever accept her? Maybe Hannah Storey is just what the town needs to remember what love, friendship, and Christmas are really about.

Sweet little story

I enjoyed this sweet little story about a young girl suffering from lose of her grandmother and a leg in an accident. Moving and finding that the school bully is nothing short of mean. But a pony suffering causes her to dig deeper within herself and her own hurts to help. Sweet story full of hope and perseverance. Received this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review.

All the Elements for a Perfect Christmas Book

This is so much more than merely a story about a disabled young woman and her quest to save a starving horse. This is a little book that looms large with Christmas spirit and page after page of lovely writing that puts you solidly in every scene.

Hannah is a new student at a rural school in a Canadian town where her parents have recently moved. She is essentially an outcast because others are intent on focusing on her prosthetic leg—a prosthesis that became part of her life after a tragic accident. Read this and enter Hannah’s world—a world in which a lovely young dreamer quietly marginalizes her disability and never stops dreaming.

Her dreams involve flying high on the back of a pony—a pony that, in real life, is vastly different from her dreams. Hannah first sees the horse on the way home from school. It is exposed to the elements; it is unkempt and underfed. She secretly names the horse “Mr. Frost” or “Frosty.” She determines that somehow, she will be the one to save the starving horse.

Accordingly, she takes riding lessons as the fall merges into winter, and she firms up her plan with the help of a young native. He doesn’t talk much, but she appreciates a contented silence, and the two become close friends. Together, they secretly slip food to the starving horse, and Hannah seeks to gain the skittish horse’s trust.

While she knows better, Hannah determines to remove the horse from its dreadful surroundings and claim it for herself. That determination sets off a string of events that culminates in one of the most heart-warming Christmas books you’ll read anywhere.

Leslie Howard’s narration is a treasure of the first and best kind. Her inflections and cadences are perfect; she becomes Hannah, and her narration allows you to feel the cold of the winter mornings as a lovely young woman walks tall, so to speak, in her determination to save an ailing horse and live a dream. Interestingly enough, her seemingly small efforts ultimately save far more than a horse.

In summation, if you have a choice of reading the print copy of this or listening to the excellent narration, go with the narration. It adds a richness to the book that will enhance your enjoyment of it.

This is a highly appropriate book for anyone of any age to enjoy. You will be saddened by the way Hannah is treated by some of her classmates, but the descriptions of the bullying are not so graphic that you should avoid the book. There is no profanity here, and there are no sexual descriptions. This is a refreshingly clean, well-written, well-plotted and well-narrated book that can become a Christmas favorite you can enjoy all year.

A Starving Horse and a Girl Determined to Save Him

Will love for a beaten animal be enough to save a life? Both realistic and enchanting. By the time I finished the story I was disappointed that it was over. It's definitely one of those books I didn't want to end.

I requested and received a copy of the audiobook free for review purposes. The narration is of excellent quality; so much so that I became totally immersed in the story.

A Heart Warming Frosty Christmas!

A sweet, feel - good, well written book. A young girl’s determination to find a friend in a new small town, where newbies aren’t welcomed. Especially a child who has a disability.
Cynical realism from a bully pushes Hannah to befriend a malnourished horse and want more from life.
Through her courage, she finally finds new friends and acceptance.
The tinge of a romantic angle was too cliche, thus the missing star. It would have been perfect without it.
Youngsters could learn a lot from Hannah through the voice talent of Leslie Howard, combined with the marvelous magical words of Laura Hesse.

slooooow.

This book was very sloooooow. I am not sure what the other reviewers listened to.
I was really looking forward to listening to this in the car with the kids traveling for the holidays. They could not get into it at all. it was way to slow for them to like.
Its is a sweet clean story for a family. I did end up listening to all of it, but I think it could of been really edited it down to make the pace of the story faster.

Leslie Howard did a fine job reading this story. Though I will not be following with this series, I would listen to anything from her again.

A Delightful Christmas Story For Any Age

One Frosty Christmas was such a cute and sweet story. It was absolutely perfect for the age group as well as us young at hearts. The story was solid with the character of Hannah and the horse Frosty. They were meant for each other. I'll listen to this one again with my granddaughter who I know will love it. Great writing by Laura Hesse.

Leslie Howard's narration was perfect for Hannah. She had a soft, relaxing voice and a wonderful storyteller. She made the story very pleasant to listen to. Definitely recommended.
