Publisher's summary

A boy is imprisoned by a witch and must tell her a new scary story each night to stay alive. This thrilling contemporary fantasy from J. A. White, the acclaimed author of the Thickety series, brings to life the magic and craft of storytelling.

Alex’s original hair-raising tales are the only thing keeping the witch Natacha happy, but soon he’ll run out of pages to read from and be trapped forever. He’s loved scary stories his whole life, and he knows most don’t have a happily ever after. Now that Alex is trapped in a true terrifying tale, he’s desperate for a different ending - and a way out of this twisted place.

This modern spin on the Scheherazade story is perfect for fans of Coraline and A Tale Dark and Grimm. With interwoven tips on writing with suspense, adding in plot twists, hooks, interior logic, and dealing with writer’s block, this is the ideal audiobook for budding writers and all fans of delightfully just-dark-enough tales.

Deliciously dark

The more I hear from this author, the more impressed O become. The stories are twisted and dark, yet beautiful. He's a master storyteller that needs more recognition.

Actually pretty scary

I was planning on reading this with my eight year old, but it is actually pretty scary. The book is well written, and had me the adult totally sucked into the story. I’ll save this for when my child is a little older.

Night books are the best

I love night books because of the characters and the characteristics of Yasmin and Alex

Darker than expected.

A twisted story. Lives depend on scary stories. A disappearing cat. A good choice for a Halloween spook.

Great story full of adventure, spine-tingling, and courage! I loved it! It’s on the Bluebonnet list this year.

More like, NightHOOKS

This book grabs you from the very beginning. As a 31 year old guy who absolutely loves horror i was worried that it would be too childish, but it wasn't. It actually had a spooky moment or two and was just over all very enjoyable. I cant wait to share this book with my nephew....when he's a little bit older haha. Hopefully the movie is anywhere near as good as this book.

beautiful

As a parent it hit home so hard when the main character finally reveled their secret. we all have talents no matter how insignificant or strange some people may view them. our talents give us strength to overcome and we shouldn't dim them at all. Shine your light bright! Very enjoyable listen.

Enjoyed!

Fun and imaginative. The narrator was good. A modern day fairytale. Looking forward to listening to the sequel.

The Wicked Witch has an apartment, Dorothy!

Alex is in trouble. While out of his apartment in the middle of the night, he's enchanted and taken by a witch. Not only is he taken but he's threatened, belittled, and made to read short, horror stories for the witch's amusement. Worse of all, he's not the first. Poor Yasmin, a sarcastic but smart, determined, Mets fan (I forgive you, Yasmin) is also there too and has begun to lose all hope of ever being returned to her family. That and a guard of a housecat, named Lenore, makes the children's lives a living heck to put up with. And, of course, Natasha, the witch, is no picnic to live with either. Being held prisoner doesn't bold well for Alex so he hatches a plan. A plan that has many moving parts. Good thing he has such a rich imagination from his stories.
