Publisher's summary

The first official Minecraft novel! In the tradition of iconic adventures like Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, the number one New York Times best-selling author of World War Z tells the story of a hero - stranded in the world of Minecraft - who must unravel the secrets of a mysterious island in order to survive.

Washed up on a beach, the lone castaway looks around the shore. Where am I? Who am I? And why is everything made of blocks? But there isn't much time to soak up the sun. It's getting dark, and there's a strange new world to explore!

The top priority is finding food. The next is not becoming food. Because there are others out there on the island...like the horde of zombies that appear after night falls. Crafting a way out of this mess is a challenge like no other. Who could build a home while running from exploding creepers, armed skeletons, and an unstoppable tide of hot lava? Especially with no help except for a few makeshift tools and sage advice from an unlikely friend: a cow.

In this world, the rules don't always make sense, but courage and creativity go a long way. There are forests to explore, hidden underground tunnels to loot, and undead mobs to defeat. Only then will the secrets of the island be revealed.

Two editions, two narrators, one thrilling story. Enjoy this version read by Jack Black, and then be sure to check out the other available version narrated by Samira Wiley.

Max Brooks and Jack Black does it get any better..

It's a short but very enjoyable story. Jack Black does a great job narrating it. As a fan of minecraft I really didn't know what to expect. It was a good story that reminded me of all the fun I had when I first started playing the game. It's got the joy of figuring out crafting recipes, and the discovery of new items and areas. I highly recommend this to any fan of the game.

My three boys and I loved Jack Black's narration!

The story was laid out perfectly for the games actual progression, so it was fun to be able to identify with the character and understand each aspect that occurred. My oldest is 12, my middle son is 10, and my youngest is 6 and as there mom I have played the game together and found Mr. Black's narration to enrich the story line even more; we are really hoping he narrates the next one. Thank you!

Jack Black slays narration

Jack Black makes this story a treat for kids and adults alike. My 6 and 4 year olds love Minecraft and they can’t get enough of this story. They have listened to it at least 10 times all the way through and continue to ask for it. My husband and I both enjoyed listening to it as well. If your kid likes Minecraft- you can’t go wrong with this story!

Should make a sequel.

I want to give jack black a high five for this. It feels like an amazing roleplay perspective of someone playing minecraft and getting into the game over time, while making some subtle jokes about the player. Max Brooks brings in a great survival mindset and lessons as well.

Why?

I saw the author's name...

I saw the narrator's name...

I saw the book title...

I thought, "Oh, sweet, its gonna be a book for all ages, with minecraft nonsense for the kids, and some tongue in cheek humor for the adults."

No. This is absolutely for children. Not very bright children, either. it's literally several hours of Jack Black describing, in excruciating detail, the basic mechanics of the most popular video game of all time.

Go play minecraft VR for 15 minutes, and you essentially just lived through this book.

I fully realize I an not the target audience here, and it's my fault for buying the book. But... There are a lot of children's books that are compelling and interesting no matter your age. This is not. it's a novelty for 1 hour, then it turns into tedium with no character developement, no real story, no real conflict.

I can only recommend this if you're under the age of 10, do not want to use your imagination and are obsessed with minecraft to the point of absurdity.

Just not for me

I *really* wanted to like this. I loved World War Z (even after, mistakenly, watching the movie), but this just wasn't my cup of tea (or tepid water for that matter).

Cute, funny, not a bad read for just about any age

While perhaps not the most complex thing ever, it was a pretty good listen. There was plenty of life lessons that are actually pretty good, if you haven't personally learned them through experience.
