Story
Holy unanticipated occurrences! It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry - and that Flora will be changed too.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Perfect for a variety of ages
We discovered Mercy Watson when my children were 4-5, and we still love her two years later! Even I don't mind hearing this book over and over and over (and parents know that's a rare find!), and I love hearing my kids howl with laughter. Mercy Watson is a pig, but her owners treat her like a person. Hilarity ensues, always finishing up with "toast, with a great deal of butter." Anybody want to know what our favorite breakfast is? Yep, toast, with a great deal of butter.

8 year old review
My daughter thought the book was really funny. She enjoyed baby sister and how she says things about the pig and chases the pig around the yard. She thinks it's funny that Mercy likes toast with butter on it just like she does.
She recommends it for any child who likes pigs or any child who likes to laugh ... a lot.

My kids loved this when they were little, and listened for nostalgia as they got older. It was such a fave that “toast with a great deal of butter” became one of our family catch phrases. A great one for evening wind down.
