Publisher's summary

Another timeless story about Mary Poppins, the world's favorite nanny, and her magical adventures with the Banks family.

From the moment Mary Poppins arrives at Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, everyday life at the Banks house is forever changed. Jane, Michael, and the twins have never had such a wonderful nanny, who brings enchantment and excitement everywhere she goes.

In Mary Poppins Comes Back, the beloved nanny returns when she's pulled down from the clouds by the string of Michael's kite. In her care, the Banks children meet the King of the Castle and the Dirty Rascal, visit the upside-down world of Mr. Turvy and his bride, Miss Topsy, and spend a breathless afternoon above the park, dangling from a clutch of balloons. Surprises are sure to pop up when Mary Poppins is around!

Not the sappy movie

(As posted in GoodReads.)
I do so like Mary Poppins! The books by PL Travers are SO MUCH better than the movie!! The whole personality of Mary Poppins is so much better in the books, and it seems to treat children overall with much more respect – although there is no arguing with the fact that there is magic, and at first glance, Mary Poppins seems harsh and shrew- like. She has a reputation for not explaining anything, but the children need to learn and absorb realities on their own – but certainly Mary Poppins provides them the environment. I love her, and I hate the movie…

Parental guidance suggested

Mary Poppins rules by fear and lies. She terrorizes children with horrible nightmare visions. She frightens another Nanny to the point the woman is catatonic. She manipulates and steals. Well she’s a witch and she makes her own rules, no surprise. I personally made this the last book in the series for my family.

Love the Narrater!

Sophie Thompson is amazingly talented! I am so glad that she is the person who was chosen for this project. I don't believe that there is another human who could have voiced this many characters. ❤❤

so so

Some of the narration was too intense, a little scary. Mostly good but weird story.

Fun and imaginative!

My children loved this. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed listening along with them. We're looking forward to listening to the rest of the Mary Poppins series.

Another Mary Poppins tale

Mary Poppins is no longer at 17 Cherry Tree Lane, but Jane and Michael remember her fondly. What they don't expect is to see her again. So, it comes as quite a surprise when Michael is flying a kite and, somehow, manages to reel in Mary Poppins from the clouds instead of his kite. With another unique entrance, Mary Poppins has returned to 17 Cherry Tree Lane to care for Jane, Michael, and their twin siblings, John and Barbara. Mary Poppins is still Mary Poppins, a no-nonsense nanny, and the Banks family welcomes her return, and with her entrance, the adventures begin again.

In this book, we see some of the wonderful characters we were introduced to in Mary Poppins - Bert the Match Man, Admiral Boom, and Miss Lark and her dogs, for example - while also meeting many new characters - Arthur Turvy and Ms. Topsy, Mr. Banks' old nanny and her lark, and Annabelle. There are lots of adventures, some of which you might recognize, as parts of this book were used in the beloved Disney movie.

While there are aspects of this book that are darker than its prequel - the introduction of Mr. Banks' nanny, whose behavior explains Mr. Banks' behavior, and how she attempts to treat Mary Poppins - there are some amazing fantastical tales too. I love the tale Annabelle tells regarding her entrance to our world and how quickly she forgets the tale.

Though this book has been adapted into a movie, a long-awaited sequel to the original, I have yet to see said movie. As such, I have no idea how well the movie follows the book. What I can say is that those who read and loved the first Mary Poppins novel will also enjoy, and possibly love, this Mary Poppins novel. Yes, it is darker than the first novel in places, but I think that reflects the growth of Jane and Michael, and that's nice to see.

The audiobook, which was narrated by Sophie Thompson, was nice to listen to, but there were places where I found myself getting frustrated with the narrator's chosen voice for many of the characters, including Mary Poppins. It felt like she was trying so hard to perform for a children's story that she ended up over-performing and getting in the way of the story. As such, I am more inclined to read the next Mary Poppins story, rather than listen to it. However, since the next book in the series is narrated by a different narrator, I may give her a try.

Mary Poppins makes you question your sanity

I love the way Mary Poppins has been recreated as a kind, yet no nonsense figure in the movies but this Mary Poppins is frightening. She’s not much different than George Banks “holy terror” nanny. She’s conceited, self centered, always cross and rude and she’s forever insulting the children’s recollection of events that they experience with her. I’m listening with my 11 year old grandson who loves the story. I can’t figure out why. All I can do is consider that it’s a different place and time although I wonder if P.L. Travers might be processing her childhood trauma and trying to find the humor and adventure in it all. 1 hr and 14 minutes remaining. It’s torture.

Meh.

Okay, it's official. I just don't like the book versions of Mary Poppins that much. Though, somehow I liked certain elements of this second one better? Namely, I felt like the adventures in this one were a little less odd than some in the first. I especially enjoyed Mr. Turvy and Miss Topsy, maybe because as a child I enjoyed looking at things upside down too, and it made me smile that Miss Topsy thought it was so much fun. To an extent I also enjoyed spotting where Disney got their inspiration for the sequel film.

Other than that... I still found myself not caring that much about the story, feeling like the children didn't learn all that much, and being annoyed with MP's absolute and *angry* insistence that nothing the children experienced had actually happened. That's what rubs me the wrong way, really. Movie Mary Poppins does insist once that something didn't actually happen, BUT she didn't get angry or horribly insulted, or insist after *every* adventure that it wasn't real. It especially bothers me that many characters, including adults, seem to know Mary Poppins is magical, but it's the children she wants to make question it. Just... why??? These poor kids are going to be messed up when they grow up after treatment like that.

There are 4 books left and to some extent I want to at least see how things are ultimately wrapped up, and I want to watch for Mr. Banks in the background to see if all this really is about saving *him*. But I only got the first two books because Audible made them free for members. Books 3-6 are not free last I checked, and I honestly don't know that I care enough to spend my one monthly credit for 4 months in a row on these books just to do that. Maybe if Audible makes the rest free at some point I'll continue, but for right now, I'm done.
