Publisher's summary

In this Chinese version of the classic fairy tale, a mother leaves her three children home alone while she goes to visit their grandmother. When the children are visited by a wolf, pretending to be their Po Po, or granny, they let him in the house, but ultimately are not fooled by his deep voice and hairy face. Combining ancient Chinese panel art techniques with a contemporary palette of watercolors and pastels, this powerful story brings lessons about strangers, trust and courage to a new generation.

When the trickster gets tricked

I teach an after school drama class where we out on small plays based on fairytales from all cultures. One of my classes came to me asking about this story (they had learned it in class at the same time we were doing Red Riding Hood) They were asking to do this version as well. I had never heard of it before and I went looking for it. I enjoy this one more than Red Riding Hood because in this one the children outsmart the wolf , even though they had been tricked in the beginning and there is no Woodsman who cuts open the wolf, as in the story we all know. It is almost like the story of the Billie Goats wanting to cross the bridge, they played into the greed of the wolf. I look forward to bringing this version to my class. The performance by B.D. Wong is wonderful, I have been a fan of him in Law and Order and all of his Broadway credits. He tells the story at the right pace and is entertaining. Very well done!
