Publisher's summary

Prince John has assembled a collection of avaricious nobles to take control of England while Richard the Lionhearted is imprisoned in Austria. This threatens to bring the country to civil war between the Norman nobles and the conquered Saxons. Standing above it all is Wilfred of Ivanhoe, a disinherited Saxon knight who has fought in the Holy Land. Now returned, he wishes to wed the fair Rowena, the highborn Saxon noble, in spite of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that stand in his way. With dozens of colorful characters, clashing swords, burning castles, kings in disguise and damsels in distress, Ivanhoe remains Scott's best-loved novel of historical romance.

A fun story with fantastic narration

Ivanhoe was a book with a great sense of adventure. Having read Don Quixote, I can now see why the titular character of that title was so enthralled by the times of chivalry and knights errant. There are charming characters and famous historical figures which are given life by the narrator BJ Harrison. Overall, a book well worth a listen. My only criticism is how predictable some of the twists/reveals were.

Tally Ho !

Bravo. Heavy in the antisemitism but resolved at the end. An abridgement skipping. 90 % of the derision of Issac of York would be preferable.

Best narration possible!

Great classic in which good triumphs over bad. The first few chapters are a bit tedious so bear with them to get to the telling of the story.

Robin Hood, The Black Knight… THIS is where they came from!

A true classic! My first time listening/reading it and I was not disappointed!

Outstanding narration. A remarkable story from start to finish. I had a hard time figuring out who was who in the beginning yet once I figured it out, I was right beside the knights and knaves fighting for righteousness!

Adventure. Romance. Betrayal. Knights and Kings...

This Classic tale for young boys stands the test of time and entertains audiences of all ages. It is a book that is fun to read. I found myself at many places thinking of my favorite movie: The Princess Bride. There are no Pirates here -- but the kidnappings, the love from afar, the farcical trial... it adds up to a story full of all the things that a reader could want. The history is not perfect but if you follow the book with a reading of Sparknotes you will get a good feeling for where it goes astray.

This year I am attempting to read more of the Classics, and this book is a rewarding reason to do so. I loved it.

B J Harrison does a good job. His narration is subtle and quiet but he builds the tension appropriately. I did enjoy Simon Prebble's narration of The Remains of the Day more, and think that he may have been a slightly better choice to read this book too.
