Publisher's summary

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the Western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits or, best of all, when the fair comes to town.

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of how her husband, Almanzo, grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

7 year old boy's review

This is the best book ever. I like that it is set on a farm and it all the cool stuff they did. They get to do lots of grown up stuff but also have fyun. The ending made me sad that it ends! I really like Almanzo's dad. It feels good inside to hear about him.

descriptions!

what I liked best was the detailed descriptions the author used .....how to make the sled, how to train the oxen, how the food was made....all just like I was there watching it!

Exceptional Telling of a Favorite

My dear mother would read this book to me as a boy. It seems nostalgically impossible to replace the warmth of her voice during storytelling. And yet Cherry Jones delivers a tale wrapped just perfectly.

Feed Milk to a Pumpkin 😁?

Almonzo. won 1st prize at the fair on a pumpkin to which he fed milk. Read lots of ways his family did things differently than we do today.

Great work ethic!!

We’ve listened to this book numerous times! I’m sure we’ll listen to it again! The stories of a little boy that works harder than most grown men today are inspiring and motivating. My 7 yr old son loves them all.

A wonderful book!!

The writing, though understandably dated in a cultural sense, is beautiful. Cherry Jones is one of my FAVORITES!!

Historical & Enjoyable!

We all thoroughly enjoyed this book.... it was a long book, but hard to stop my 9 yo boy from listening! he listed to nearly 14 chapters in one day while he was feeling under the weather and he laughed and was excited for Almanzo's adventures!
We will probably be re-listening to it again soon! And, as a mother, I love all of the historical accuracy and information!

Descriptive details of Early Pioneer Life w/ Values

I found it interesting to her how Laura’s husband was raised in vivid detail. How the workings of a family farm works to business in town. Interwoven the values of respect, integrity, honesty, value of oneself and value of hard work. Ways the kids had fun throughout the different seasons was reminiscent for me. Wonderful easy listen audio book.

A lovely trip down memory lane.

I read the series in grammar school. I have sent through bad the series a few times as an adult and I will say the audiobooks add a little something extra. They are well done and again they are a lovely trip down memory lane. I highly encourage you to re-listen to the books as an adult. They are still equally wonderful children’s books as well.
