Publisher's summary

Read by Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier, Kathleen Turner, and Matthew Broderick, here are the stories of the immortals of Olympus - the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece - as freshly described as if they were alive today.

Mighty Zeus, with his fistful of thunderbolts; mischievous little Hermes; grey-eyed Athena, godess of wisdom; Asclepius, the first physician; Orpheus and his beloved Euridice; Helios the sun, crossing the heavens in his fiery chariot.... these and other equally fabulous figures are featured here with their heroic deeds and petty squabbles illuminated in full dimension.

Critic reviews

"For any child fortunate enough to have this generous book...the kings and heroes of ancient legend will remain forever matter-of-fact; the pictures interpret the text literally and are full of detail and witty observation." ( Horn Book)

The best way to read the Book of Greek Myths!

We're so happy with this purchase. We love all the D'Aulaire books and have spent many happy hours with them, but, I must admit, the Book of Greek Myths was a bit of a trying experience to read. All the many names of the Greek Gods and Goddesses left me tongue tied, but the illustrations were so compelling that the children (8, 6 & 5) requested it again and again. It was such a joy to happen upon a flawlessly enunciated, unabridged recording. We often listen to it while following along with the book. Its been a great way to share these stories and now we all know how to pronounce the names!

D'Aulaires' - #1 book to learn basics; ALL AGES!

D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths, is the absolute best book written for learning everything you would like to know about Greek Mythology, in my opinion, of course. This audible version is great as it portrays the facts in more of a story form than anything you'd find in a textbook. If you've always been interested in learning more about Greek Mythology but don't know where to start; this audio version is highly recommend! There isn't just one person reading to you, droning on and on... There are many voices, both male and female, reading for different "stories." Plus, it has been broken into short segments containing each story. If listened to from beginning to end It's in chronological order. Although, if you'd like to skip to a certain "Myth," that is possible as well! 5 stars all the way. I've listened many times in different formats and have read the actual book. I feel that the audio version will always be a "go-to" whenever one would want to brush up on any Greek Mythology or just get started on your journey of more in depth study. Like I said, this is great for all ages!!

the best overview of greek myths

I first read this book when I was about 7 and listened to the tapes on long trips with my parents. I was ecstatic to find the audio book on audible as the tapes have long since been lost. These versions of the myths manage to be child appropriate while not having been stripped of their more colorful characters and moments. Highly recommended both the print book and this recording for anyone at any age.

Awesome Narration!

My seven year old son listened and followed along in the book for the passed two days. He was totally hooked. He said some of the parts were creepy and there was a lot of killing though. He was able to read the characters names all correctly afterward which impressed me because I didn't even know how to say some of them. Great buy!

Classic tales with classic narration

My kids love to listen to this (and ask for it over and over)! I love that they are listening to classic stories. There are so many references to Greek mythology throughout much of literature worth reading. I am glad they are being introduced now. And I like listening to Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier!

Great for Homeschooling!

It took my girls a few chapters before they enjoyed the stories but it has become a favorite part of their homeschool day. The stories are funny and listening by audio really helps with learning the pronunciation of the Greek names. I highly recommend listening to this with your children.

Great narrators, Colossally BORING writing!

It wouldn't matter if Paul Newman or the greatest orator on the Earth were reading this. They can't make up for the appallingly simplistic writing . It is one declarative sentence after another, with entire myths boiled down to sentences! How did these actors agree to read this _____? It's astonishing that anyone could make these magical myths so BORING, but D'Aulaire has succeeded many times over!

IT WOULD BE MORE EXCITING TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE READ THE TELEPHONE DIRECTORY.

Edith Hamilton's Mythology if far better. Not great, but far, far better than this.
