Publisher's summary

Cracker is one of the United States Army's most valuable weapons: a German shepherd trained to sniff out bombs, traps, and the enemy. The fate of entire platoons rests on her keen sense of smell. She's a Big Deal, and she likes it that way. Sometimes Cracker remembers when she was younger, and her previous owner would feed her hot dogs and let her sleep in his bed. That was nice, too.

Rick Hanski is headed to Vietnam. There, he's going to whip the world and prove to his family, his sergeant, and everyone else who didn't think he was cut out for war that they were wrong. But sometimes Rick can't help but wonder that maybe everyone else is right. Maybe he should have just stayed at home and worked in his dad's hardware store.

When Cracker is paired with Rick, she isn't so sure about this new owner. He's going to have to prove himself to her before she's going to prove herself to him. They need to be friends before they can be a team, and they have to be a team if they want to get home alive.

Told in part through the uncanny point of view of a German shepherd, Cracker! is an action-packed glimpse into the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a dog and her handler.

Point of View

The point of view from the soldier's to Willie's to Cracker- brilliant. The Vietnam war stories are somewhat ignored and this brings a personal understanding of one part of the war. Dog owners will feel the connection!

An outstanding "war" story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

absolutely, a young adult or an adult read that acurately depicts the Viet Nam war era. A great Grandparent/grandchild story to share.

What did you like best about this story?

The truth of the human/animal bond, the accuracy of portrayal of the politics of the era. I was 19 around the time the protaginist was 19 so to me it was a story of my "coming of age" The method of interspersing the dog's thought with the humans was masterful.

What about Kimberly Farr’s performance did you like?

well paced narration

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no, I needed to digest the events as they progressed.

Any additional comments?

I have read MANY Viet Nam war stories and this one is highly accurate and very appealing to all ages. I think it is the best I have read.

Not what I was expecting...

Not really for war aficionados. It's a weird dichotomy. The narration might appeal to juveniles but the subject of war probably shouldn't. Wish I could get my money back.

Exceptional Story

This realistic fiction was exceptionally well written. I read it with my eighth grade students after studying about Vietnam Nam. The students looked forward to each chapter and learning about this era in history. Five stars!!

Great

Amazing!

I loved the story line. Cracker is my favorite character, she is very tough and a little stubborn (like me).
