Editorial reviews

This iMinds production is an illuminating exploration of the history and traditions surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. Children everywhere know that Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, believing it to be the date of Jesus' birth. One of the many facts children will be surprised to hear is that it is unsure when Jesus was born, and what reasons Christians used in choosing that date. Jude Beaumont has an infectious cheer and enthusiasm as she recounts the story of Mary and Joseph, the innkeeper and Three Wise Men, even providing helpful tips on making your own nativity scene.

Publisher's summary

Learn about Celebrating the Nativity with iMindsJNR audio learning series for younger minds. Every year you probably celebrate Christmas on 25 December. Someone may have told you that this is the day of Jesus’ birth. But nobody actually knows when he was born! The Bible does not give us a date for the birth of Jesus. So early Christians took the date of important ancient festivals and placed Christmas around the same time.

Before Christianity, the Romans had a winter festival called Saturnalia, which took place for one week in mid-December. And on 25 December some Romans also celebrated the birthday of Mithras, who was the Persian god of the sun.

Excellent Short on Birth of Christ

Great short listen of birth of Jesus, with descriptions of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the Wise Men (we don't actually know how many . . . but the nativity scenes usually depict three based on the GIFTS they brought, Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh). No one knows the actual date of his birth, but the date was selected based on pagan (yes, I know 🙄) holidays around the same time. I appreciate these short audio clips that cover quite a lot of information in a limited amount of time. Most are well worth the time and very well done.
