Captain Teggs is no ordinary dinosaur - he's an astrosaur! On the incredible spaceship DSS Sauropod, along with his faithful crew, Gypsy, Arx and Iggy, Teggs rights wrongs, fights evil and eats a lot of grass!
Teggs and the crew are sent on a special mission - to the Carnivore Sector! King Jerk, one of the nicer, peaceful Carnivore rulers, has contracted deadly space mumps. The DSS don't want Jerk to die; his successor is violent and fearsome, so they've sent the only dinosaur in space - a herbivore, Dr Herrodon - who can cure him, along with the crew of the Sauropod, to help. But when they arrive at King Jerk's palace, things are not what they seemed at first. Strange attacks keep happening at night, and Dr Herrodon keeps going missing. Can Teggs get to the bottom of it all and help cure King Jerk?
My 5 and half yr old son loves these books - we've got a tonne of the audio books and have read all the available ones at the library.
Toby Longworth's fabulously Monty Pythonesque French accents for the carnivores in this one had me in stiches but that was probably the best bit for me. I found Steve Cole's attempt at stitching "tolerance for all races" and "talk before violence" into the plot slightly ham handed. Or possibly I've just listened to soooo many of these books now I can see the flaws more clearly.
Regardless my son (the intended audience) lying sick on the sofa, having been sent home with a vomiting bug from school loved it. He listened to the whole thing all the way through and declared it was "brilliant". Whether this was the being sent home from school or the story, who can say?
A great story, with a great astrosaurs style sting in the tail. Well read, and keeps my 3 boys (aged nine, seven and four) entertained all the way through. They have listened to this many times. Its great that it's unabridged too. Its a great story but may be a bit scary for the smallest of listeners.
