Publisher's summary

To prepare his daughter, Sara, for society, wealthy widower Captain Ralph Crewe enrolls her in Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies. Unspoiled and genial, Sara is given all the luxuries her father can afford - and the obsequious Miss Minchin is happy to indulge. But when her father dies and his fortune is lost, Sara is forced into servitude, stripped of her privileges and possessions, and subjected to Miss Minchin's true cruel nature.

But as A Little Princess proves, with cleverness, resilience, selfless goodwill, and true friends, a child can be rewarded with infinite riches.

Excellent children's classic

Lovely and delightful this children's classic will bring joy and tears as the reader journeys along with Sarah through wealth, separation, loneliness, loss, hardship, and renewal. Young and old alike can learn the timeless value of kindness in this classic story. The narrator brought the characters fully to life in the Brilliance audio edition.

Loved it!

This was my first time reading this classic novel, unabridged as well and I absolutely loved it!!! Sarah was such a loveable and admirable character, wise beyond her age! Beautifully written story! The narrator for the audio book did an excellent job! I especially loved her accents for different characters.

"How it is that animals understand things I do not know, but it is certain that they do understand. Perhaps there is a language which is not made of words and everything in the world understands it. Perhaps there is a soul hidden in everything and it can always speak, without even making a sound, to another soul."

All time favorite!

I read this story when I was 7 and have never forgotten the lessons of strength in the face of adversity, the power of positive thinking and charity when there is abundance. I love this story and passed it’s magic on to my children.

The Little Princess

When they say the book is better, they weren’t kidding! Shirley Temple did a fair job in the film, she did what the directors wanted, but the book is far better than the film. The narrator is alright. I’ve listened to her before and she takes some getting used to. Her voice has a bit of a whiny tone to it which you have to either ignore or accept and get used to as the book goes along and you done hear as much. By the end of the first chapter I barely heard the whining undertones. She doesn’t do individual distinct voices but you can tell who is speaking. She IS a good narrator in the end. It’s a fantastic story and worth listening to again!

Adequate at best

The reader did not take much care over the inflection of phrases. Throughout the novel, she missed subtleties of meaning by not stressing the correct word in a sentence.

It was quite jarring to hear all the servant class characters in the book, who were clearly written to be Cockney, portrayed as Irish!

And while MelchiSEDick may be correct in Hebrew, I’ve never heard it pronounced so in English—and considering that the author was American, I strongly feel the name should have been pronounced MelCHIsedeck.
