Publisher's summary

The second gripping thriller in the Kate Brannigan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.

PI Kate Brannigan is hired to investigate a series of strange financial scams across Manchester. At first it looks like a discrepancy with the paperwork, but the deeper Kate digs, the murkier the case becomes.

Before long she’s up to her neck in crooked land deals – and murder – and her own life is on the line....

Critic reviews

"A satisfying range of villains, Manchester and its environs turn deeply sinister and Brannigan toughs and wisecracks her way to a solution." (The Times)

"Kate Brannigan deserves promotion to the top rank, alongside Kinsey Millhone and V.I. Warshawski. Plot, characterisation, pace are all first-rate, and Brannigan is one of the most likeable of all today’s PIs." (Sunday Telegraph)

Love this series

I have just got into the Kate Brannigan series having listened to a few other Of Val McDermid’s books. Whilst I thoroughly enjoy all her books are find that all are read so brilliantly this one was a little tricky to get on top of all the characters - I got there in the end but I know if I’d been reading an actual book I would have been turning back the pages to catch up which character had done what with who!

Funny down to earth PI

I’m enjoying this series, there is suspense but also some funny passages. It’s refreshing to have a protagonist who is not suffering from a miserable home life. And to read about a female protagonist who is neither a damsel in distress nor a Kill Bill Type fighter.

Clever scam!

love that Val writes about local places and I am growing to like Kate more in this book. The scam s a very realistic sort of scam which makes it more plausible.

Dumped it halfway through

The author begins this book alluding to a boring story., and boy this really is. Whoever thought the details of land registry would make a good read was seriously deluded. I don't think I've ever given up before the end in the past but on this occasion I just had to.

Not as good as the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series

This series of books is ok but In a different league to the Tony Hill books. I bought the series of these after enjoying the Tony Hill books. I find it hard to believe these are by the same author. These just don’t grip me the same. The plots are not very plausible either.

Better than the first book

The narrator was more consistent with the different characters’ voices this time and the plot was more convincing.
Looking forward to listening to the next book 😊

Seriously Disappointed

I don’t recognise Val McDermid in this book. Totally bereft of the engaging intrigue usually associated with her work.

series gets underway

As an avid reader of crime I have been meaning to try some Val mcDermid books. Her Kate Branaghan series is really getting going with this second installment.
Great narrator and easy to listen to on long journeys. I shall keep on with the next.
