The Constitution is the original Contract with America. It is the people’s instrument for restraining government power, not the government’s tool to restrain the people. The Founders, in their wisdom, created a republican form of government that protects Natural Rights from the danger of being canceled by means of a democratic majority vote. This is why the Constitution does not mention the word “democracy” even once. After all, freedom is much more important than majority rule. Understanding the Constitution as a restrictive force that protects the Natural Rights of individuals and minorities is vitally important for all Americans. Thomas Jefferson once said, “In questions of powers, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” It is the hope of this author that this book will help in the effort to educate people about the intents and purposes of the Constitution. The functions of the Constitution are broken down and described in brief, but, perhaps more importantly, there is a concerted effort to explain the most important principles informing the Instrument. Appendices are meant to be read, like the chapters of most books, but they may be read in any order. And, of course, the full text of the Constitution, its Bill of Rights, and the remaining seventeen amendments can be found among the appendices. Enjoy learning about this exciting topic!
