Publisher's summary

Peyton Callaghan is a fighter, a survivor, and a warrior. When it was kill or be killed, she didn't hesitate. Now she's the only one left standing, haunted by the ghost of a dead man and plagued with the guilt of having taken another person's life. The upheaval of her life to start over in Rock Falls has been shaky at best, her worst nightmares and wildest desires colliding with each other. Terror tortures her nightly, breeding fear inside her dreams. And in every waking moment, she fights against the lust that threatens to drown her.

Jayden King harbors secrets beneath his outward playboy demeanor. The women who warm his bed lay claim to nothing - you can't lay claim to someone who doesn't have a heart. His wit and charm are exquisite means of deflection and distraction from the turmoil roaring inside him. He's hidden in plain sight, a mask of humor keeping the sadness at bay. The only real reflections of his soul are in the artwork he creates, pieces of him muraled on the skin of others. If tattoo artists could have a calling card, the etch of pain and suffering in each design would be his. Because when the lights go out and the women he's satisfied have gone home, he's alone with every fear he refuses to face.

After suffering from a brutal attack at the hands of her roommate's stalker, Peyton is forced to live with the object of her affection. Without intention, she breathes love into his starved heart, and although the mere thought of that terrifies him, Jayden would burn the city down to keep her safe, causalities be damned.

Some people you have. Some people you hold.

She can have him. She can hold him. But can she keep King? Or is it impossible for Callaghan to keep something that was never really hers to begin with?

Lovin this Series!

Really enjoyed this book. I knew Peyton was going to have an interesting story! I love that she is a strong women and Jayden is a super sexy protective bossy man! This book had excitement, softness, honestly and hot sex! Really enjoying this series and am looking forward to Jackson's story because the end of this book really set us up for the next book!!!

Great narration!

Not the best one

I’ve loved this series, and maybe I’ve just listened too many in a row, because this one is less good than the other. Jay is completely different than he’s made out to be on the other books and I don’t think they put enough into building their relationship before they are in LOVE. It’s cheesy. And the whole male possessiveness, while hot to a point, seems overdone in the series. Also - narrators voice just doesn’t match what I think his would be.

awkward and weird

I cringed over and over listening to this, I didn't read the previous books but I think it didn't matter.

Another fabulous story

I’m loving this series. This one was really sad about what happened to Jay & Peyton in their past. Peyton is such a strong woman/soul. I do love how she handles Jay. Jay is perfect for her too.

Little depth

Story was not well written. Some stilted dialogue. Was this supposed to be a S&M comedy? (Eye roll.). Not amused. Not much depth to the story. The narrators were excellent.

Cliff hanger

Getting to know the backstory was the best part.. hearing the love between them was so beautiful but the end was the best.. what comes next!

Some improvements from previous books

I’ll gladly admit that there were a few really good lines in this book. (Also quite a few over the top cheesy ones…). I’ll also say that Peyton’s character was surprising. I thought I’d had a little better read on her, but her trauma wasn’t what I’d anticipated. I also didn’t anticipate Jayden’s previous trauma. I am sad that we didn’t really see ANY of the Jayden from previous books though. His personality was completely different in this book. Some of it I liked, a lot of it I didn’t.
It’s really aggravating that this author doesn’t seem to be able to write any other romantic interest character beyond that of a pseudo, overly-aggressive alpha-male.

***Venting spoilers ahead***

I’m SO over the poorly-done pseudo BDSM type crap that is so often written into romance novels, and equally over the & poorly done pseudo alpha males.
Peyton has only had one relationship ever (really?!) & he was wildly controlling, violent. And even after finally disclosing the absolute nightmare that she survived, Jayden still goes ultra alpha on her & gets even more possessive & domineering?! And then basically threatens her with this crappy attempt at BDSM type stuff by attempting the basically be her Dom, but without ever having a discussion or obtaining consent of any kind?! Just wtf. Such bullsh*t. Jayden is supposed to be this tortured soul who’s in love with Peyton but instead just acts like a douchebag most of the time.
I’m already sad to see sweet Jackson get turned into an alphahole in the next book, but since there’s only one more audiobook left, I might as well continue…

Language to much

I mean what’s the reason why Gods name need to be toss around like that. Story was okay, but to much cursing.

Hey, fourth time’s the charm

I’ve tried to listen to this series but the first few had me skipping through or cringing at the storyline and the creepy possessiveness. I’m glad I kept at it. I enjoyed this one. I think the dual pov helped. On to the next one. ;)
