Publisher's summary

Ruby Bozarth, a newcomer to Rosedale, Mississippi, is also fresh to the Mississippi Bar - and to the docket of Circuit Judge Baylor, who taps Ruby as defense counsel in a racially charged felony.

The murder of a woman from one of the town's oldest families has Rosedale's upper crust howling for blood, and the prosecutor is counting on Ruby's inexperience to help him deliver a swift conviction. Ruby's client is a college football star who has returned home after a career-ending injury, and she is determined to build a defense that will stick. She finds help in unexpected quarters from Suzanne, a hard-charging attorney armed to the teeth, and Shorty, a diner cook who knows more than he lets on.

Ruby never belonged to the country-club set, but once she nearly married into it. As news breaks of a second murder, Ruby's ex-fiance, Lee Greene, shows up on her doorstep - a Southern gentleman in need of a savior. As lurid, intertwining investigations unfold, no one in Rosedale can be trusted, especially the 12 men and women impaneled on the jury. They may be hiding the most incendiary secret of all.

Why waste a credit on James Patterson

I used to wait eagerly for any James Patterson book. Not anymore. I have learned to carefully read the reviews and plot before using my credits on his books. I thought this sounded interesting enough and the reviews were above 4.0. But, no, still an airport novel. The narrator was annoying to me with her "southern" accent. It sounds to me that he plans to make this another one of his serials and I will stay far away from it.

Eh

Not sure if it was a full book or just a couple of short stories stuck together to fill a contract.

Wish I could give negative stars !

Terrible! Shame on you James Patterson! I have been a fan for years, but I will likely never again waste my money or time on another one of your books. It was worse than a "B" rated movie. And don't get me started on the narrator and her over the top southern accent! The most positive thing I can say about this book, besides the fact that it's over, is at least audible will refund my credit!

Weak Patterson Novel

The main character was not too bright! Kept waiting for something to happen. Not the usual twisted plots & characters Patterson is known for. I hope the increased speed of new novels he is putting out is not an indication of more novels like this. I have been a loyal Patterson reader and was excited about this one, but disappointed.

Skipping is an issue

Couldn’t get into the story because the book starts skipping, it cuts out the first work of every sentence starting in chapter 4!

Janet Evanovich ... not James Patterson

Yikes! Dumb without a compelling story. Really wanted to grasp this book - still listening to last 2 predictable chapters as I write. Janet Evanovich, at least, was taken with a grain of salt and had some laughs. Just saying ...

silly.

I have read this story, or one exactly like it before. Is not new. 2nd Time with this author, who writes conversations as between stupid people, missing, always the obvious answer or point. I guess it's just artistic license. I used to think this guy was pretty good, but in his old age, maybe it's just not working so well for him.

Juror #3

I don’t know how Mr. Paterson “knows” Mississippi, but he nailed it. I was dubious at first, but the more I listened, the more I enjoyed it. Congratulations from a Mississippi by.

I just wanted it to end. NOT Patterson.

This was really two books that were hardly connected. It starts out with the same story that’s been done a million times before - a young lawyer in Mississippi trying to save the life of a wrongfully accused man. Then, 6 months later, she all of the sudden knows what she’s doing. The narration was awful, especially due to the overdone accent. I cringed every time she said “Old Miss.” this is not to mention that the story was hardly even about Juror #3! So unsatisfying. I will not be fooled by the Patterson co-author game again

Good fun

Truly entertaining- a worthy read and not requiring much thought. Great characters - good plot. If you’re looking for a quick, delightful read - this is it.
