Publisher's summary

A cursed druid, blackmailed by a faery queen to find a missing magic rock. Let's just hope they don't hack the druid off...for everyone's sake.

Name's Colin McCool. Folks call me the Junkyard Druid. I hate that name.

Despite my last name, I'm not "cool" like the other hunters in town. I don't run an occult bookstore, I've never owned a Harley, and I didn't inherit a family fortune passed down through generations of hunters before me.

And I kind of have this curse on me that's messed up my life.

So, things have gone to hell since I was cursed. I live in a junkyard, my mentor Finn is a heroin addict, I've got the Cold Iron Circle breathing down my neck, and the local Fae Queen Maeve is blackmailing me into doing her dirty work.

Now I'm in way over my head trying to retrieve Maeve's stolen magic rock, all while helping my friend Belladonna solve a series of murders that may or may not involve the local werewolves.

And did I mention that my girlfriend is a ghost?

If I can just get the Faery Queen's tathlum back, and help Belladonna solve the murders...

Then I just might live long enough to finish my first year of college.

Disappointed

I'm a huge fan of the Iron Druid series, so, I decided to give this series a try. I was disappointed early into the book but I forced myself to give it a try. Big mistake. The more I listened, the more I became disconnected to the story. Massey failed to establish a relationship between the main character and the world in which he lives. The characters also flat and disingenuous. I simply couldn't get into it.

It's an "okay" book

The narrator did a fair job but the story itself was flat. The author opens the book with a note saying he wanted to write an adult urban fantasy novel because he wanted to write something gritty but honestly this book fits in the YA urban fantasy section.

Great book !!!

Have you listened to any of Steven Barnett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. But I really liked, specially the action moments , this Narrator is able to convey the emotions from the characters.

Any additional comments?

I loved this book and I think that most fans of the Iron Druid and Harry Dresden will like it! I'm curious to see the development of the story. The book one is building up its world. So far some Celtic Mythology involved, fairies, witches, vampires, werewolves. I'm afraid to give to many details and spoil the fun hehe

Dresden wept.

This had so many rip offs it made me super sad. Even the reader sounded like he was ripping off James Marster's preformance . It was a sad slog.

I couldn't finish it.

I can't stand the poor me types. If the characters are in a state of sorrow the whole time forget it! I tried listening through 4 chapters and couldn't finish the book.

Good new urban fantasy

Good start to a new urban fantasy series. Multiple interesting characters to develop here, and an interesting established relationship between the main character and his dead girlfriend.

not a bad start to a series

just a few initial thoughts. this series needs some work on several fronts, but I have invested in less, the author/editor need to step-up world building and character development, but I liked most of the cast and it's size relative to the novel. The narrator to has promise, but will need to increase his range and timing. as I said just a few thoughts and I was in a good mood when I listened to it so everything is imho, will update when I do a relisten

Solid

A sturdy urban fantasy with a somewhat different emotional tone. Dour fun. Main character is less plagued by invincibility than many main characters in urban fantasy.

Falls a little short in my opinion.

While I enjoyed the skeleton of this story. I felt that it’s execution fell more than a little short. The main character is consistently talking about his lost love, and how he himself is responsible for her demise. Yet when push comes to shove you don’t feel it on his end. Something that to me should be an almost crushing, and debilitating event in his life. Colin Mccool is apparently too cool to feel it I guess.
Another point of contention for me was I did feel like there were a couple areas with more info than needed, and others that didn’t get enough of an explanation. I’m giving it three stars overall cause it is a first in the series and I like what is being built.
