Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered and examines why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceedingly rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

By making friends of enemies and demonstrating a commitment to fairness, the two republics - both "reluctant" yet unquestioned super-powers - built empires based on trust. Madden also includes vital lessons from the Roman Republic's 100-year struggle with "terrorism."

During the late years of the 18th century, the spirit of Enlightenment thinking and revolution were in the air. The world was changing, moving away from ingrained beliefs about religion, reason, society, and the rights of the individual and turning more toward the laws of nature as interpreted by the scientific method. Nowhere was the influence of this radical new way of thinking more apparent than in France, and the upheaval this caused would come to bloody fruition in the form of revolution.

Emigration of people from Sicily often overshadows the importance of the people who immigrated to the island through the centuries. These have included several who became Sicily's rulers, along with Jews, Ligurians, and Albanians. Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Goths, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans, Hohenstaufens, Spaniards, Bourbons, the Savoy Kingdom of Italy and the modern era have all held sway, and left lasting influences on the island's culture and architecture.

"The evil that men do lives after them / The good is oft interred with their bones."
So eulogizes Mark Antony in Shakespeare’s history Julius Caesar. Just who was this legendary ruler? In this ultra-short audiobook by iMinds, Australian performer Todd MacDonald will introduce the listener to this young Priest of Jupiter, military conqueror who dreamed of extending Roman reach to Brittany, and shrewd political mind. Did you know he was also probably very hairy? At five minutes and 41 seconds long, this fun presentation can be listened to while you’re on hold for a pizza from Little Caesar’s.

Priest of Jupiter 👀
This short listen about the ruler of the Roman Empire is an interesting one. When he was thirteen years old he was appointed priest of Jupiter. He was married so many times, it is hard to keep count. While he is very much remembered as an important historical figure, it is very clear that he was SELF important, as well.

A glimpse into Caesar's life
Heard of Julius Caesar in a different light recently when listening to Cleopatra's history in the History of Ancient Egypt by Bob Brier. This audio book covered Caesar's life from a Roman perspective, however, the story remains the same about how he becomes a powerful military commander, then a politician and eventually become a dictator and continues to be a dictator until his assassination. History has so much to teach us indeed. Well narrated by Todd MacDonald.
