This is the story of Josh Carson who became the sheriff of Golden Oklahoma while on his way to California. He finally tires of the job and continues on to Santa Fe New Mexico where he meets a wagon train. He makes friend with three families and after they learn Josh was a lawman they ask him to become their wagon master. The rest of the story is about how hard life is on the pioneers and how they arrived in California.
