Actually about leadership

Funny. I wasn't looking for a book about directing, but actually there are leadership lessons in here. Also I'm following acting lessons (very amateur, but nevertheless) and it's interesting to hear how top actors prepare for movies.

Excellent

This would be a great book to review before starting a big project or even something on a smaller scale. There are points in the book that I feel help first time directors and directors that are looking to remember what they might've messed up on the first time.

A Gold Mine of Information

Whether you are in prep or studying to direct, this is the most practical and thoughtful guide I have come across. From tips that will save you when covering action, guiding performance, breaking down the script and prepping for each step of the process, on top of plenty of entertaining anecdotes, Badham does a tremendous job with a real flair for instructing.

Mr Badham is a great teacher!

As a fan of John Badham the filmmaker since the 1980s, I greatly enjoyed to discover that he is also a wonderful, informative teacher with a nice sense of humor. This book is a must for any aspiring filmmaker, but not just for wannabe directors. There are also some great important lessons here for screenwriters by a guy who has seen it all!

A Must!

John's insight is invaluable! While most filmmaking books are done by people who have only made a single unknown film, John's experience allows him to speak depths about how to direct and what makes a good director successful

A must for new film directors

Simply one of the best books on directing. It's about directing and not about story structure or how to create great characters etc. that of course a writer and director should both know about, but it's way more practical and it's about what a director needs to do in preparation, on set and in post production to make the most honest and realistic representation of the story. It's about how to keep the story alive with the actors and collaborators. It's a university masterclass, not a book. Unfortunately, it's more than most will learn in university, but it's great news for new film directors as all you need to do is watch films, listen to this masterclass, watch courses online, maybe do a film course just for the degree and write your own script and I promise you'll be ready to go and you'll be ahead of most people in the industry who are starting out. Cuz most people are just lazy.

Mostly about directing actors

Some directors only think about actors not the technical side. This book is mostly about managing people. There's some small information about tension and suspense. but nothing new if you've read widely in this area. I work in film and this book was a big disappointment. if you direct actors and need help with that, this book will be very helpful. If you want anything else, look elsewhere.
