  • 523: Honor, Commitment, Sacrifice, and Faith. What It Takes to Get Through Hell. With Landon Longgrear
    Jan 14 2026

    >Join Jocko Underground<

Landon Longgrear was a United States Marine who answered the call to serve with quiet resolve, carrying the weight of duty far from home into the unforgiving terrain of Afghanistan. His life stands as a testament to courage without fanfare—proof that honor is often written not in words, but in sacrifice.

U.S. Marines at the Battle for Sangin is a battle-intensive and deeply personal war memoir following a small Marine infantry detachment who arrive in Afghanistan with acts of killing beginning immediately. Not a week goes by before the Marines experience the deaths of friendly forces, Marine casualties, enemy combatants killed, numerous IED strikes, air strikes, predator drone strikes and around-the-clock patrolling in hostile territory where death is ever present.

This outstanding podcast deploys military strategic, tactical, maneuvering, and more fine-grained situational skills, using his extensive Tier One Operator career USN SEAL - green-to-gold (enlisted warrior to officer leadership warrior), to demonstrate the near universal applicability of this “battle proven” approach to most any/every aspect of one’s life. His axioms, familiar to many who served in uniform, are actually exceedingly applicable and beneficial to the wider life we all live… from personal growth and development to friendships and marriage, from career objectives to lifestyle or athletic endeavors, and to a range of interpersonal situations. Of course, the military training and combat stories utilized are extremely interesting and frankly the principle reason I first tuned into the podcast; however, the extension of these narratives into areas as diverse as training in the gym, competition in sport, recreational activities, life-long learning, interpersonal relationships, individual internal growth, etc. are what round out his presentations. This interweaving of combat experience and the broader world of intra- and interpersonal affairs makes this effort not simply entertainment, but enlightenment. Admittedly, his initial series of podcasts are some of my favorites, because he pulls from his extensive collection of military historical texts, and current field manuals, with a rich intermingling of book quotes followed by his military experiences of a similar ilk, and then to how the same ethos, strategies, tactics, and skills are functional in one’s present life circumstances. By all appearances (I don’t personally know the man), he comes across as an honest, honorable, humble, and learned individual. Still learning, as we all should so long as we have breathe and the gift of life. It matters not if you’re 12 years old, 24 yrs. old, 48 yrs. old, 65 yrs. old, or well into your 80’s, with modifications to fit your circumstances, the insights, guidance, and approach to life is applicable to YOU.
