The stark and beautiful romance of a governess and the master of a house with long-kept secrets.

After a sad and neglected childhood as an orphan, Jane Eyre is hired by Edward Rochester as governess for his ward. Jane is pleased with the quiet country life at Thornfield, with the beautiful old manor house and gardens, with the book-filled library, and with her own comfortable room.

But there are stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughs like a maniac, and who stays in rooms on the third floor. The moody Rochester rebuffs her attempts to find discover more, ordering her to keep silent on the matter.

An unlikely relationship blooms between the two, however, and Jane is thrilled to accept Rochester’s proposal of marriage. But the quiet ceremony is shockingly halted by a stranger who claims that Rochester was already married - to the raving maniac Jane had heard crying in the house.

Grief-stricken, Jane flees from Thornfield, feeling that her life is over before it has really begun. Can she ever hope to find a comfortable life again - or even dare to dream of a happily ever after?

I have been looking over my reviews published on Audible and realized I've only commented on the books I don't like. That's sad because I own over 200 Audible books and I have been a member for a long time. Most of the time I like the books I purchase. I work with my hands and I am literally listening to audiobooks all day long. Jane Eyre as read by my FAVORITE narrator, Susan Ericksen is an example of why I love this artform so much. Of course I read Jane Eyre in school, I read it later when I was a young adult but to hear it interpreted by a truly great reader brings so much color and feeling that a classic story becomes a joy to experience

I loved it so much I've listened to it 9 times.

What did you love best about Jane Eyre?

Unlike many classics whose language is difficult to understand and not relatable, this classic remains timeless. From a difficult childhood, challenging work experience and romance Jane survives and thrives.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Jane Eyre?

Her confrontations: with her aunt, the headmistress and Rochester.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to all the JD Robb books. It is not possible to do a comparison as Ms. Ericksen has the ability to present many accents, male and female. She is my favorite audio book performer.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I also enjoy savoring a great novel and performance.

Incredible classic

Such a sweet and heart warming story, I loved every minute. It took a while choosing from so many narrators of this novel. I was not at all disappointed! I loved the passion and pace if both the story and the narration.

I loved this book!
