In this short book, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? What do words like Islamism, jihadism, and fundamentalism mean in today's world?

Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its analysis, this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical is all the more startling for its decorum. Harris and Nawaz have produced something genuinely new: they engage one of the most polarizing issues of our time - fearlessly and fully - and actually make progress.

Islam and the Future of Tolerance has been published with the explicit goal of inspiring a wider public discussion by way of example. In a world riven by misunderstanding and violence, Harris and Nawaz demonstrate how two people with very different views can find common ground.

Narration: great performances of both the authors. They are used to this kind of thing and speak of subjects they care and know a lot about, which shines through. It sounds more like a letter correspondence than a live podcast, which results in a few, not so smooth transitions between the two. But it is no way a problem and also insures they don't speak over each other.

A great dialog between two people I've been following prior to this book. It is very instructive in setting a standard for these kind of debates between religious and non religious people.
Makes some very important distinctions between the kind of Muslims in the world, and in separating the idea of Islamism as an ideology, from the religion of Islam and the majority of Muslims.

It is not a philosophical debate about the nature of God in Islam and the plausibility of such a God's existence.

Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism

Advice from an admitted hypocrite and partisan some of what sam Harris and others in the intellectual circle I would tentatively label the leftist opposition:

Please go into this conversation whether you think Sam Harris is a bigoted bomb thrower with bad ideas or if he is one of the few rational voices the philosophical ethical left... Or you just think he's some guy. I was familiar with machine from the L actual squared debate and I, traps from intellectual weariness, came into this discussion trying to be as objective and non reactionary as possible even when A position caused a reaction. I believe that this is what could be called debate in a country or society that values truth. I ended up agreeing with neither , but came out much more in rich because of it.

For Sam Harris fans, this would be second only to the lying and free will booklets.

So much better than either camp might proclaim.

The kind of conversation we should engage in more. It is mutually respectful, thoughtful, and candid and extremely easy to listen to.
One should note that more than an hour of the recording is not the book proper, but a kind-of "post-script" (interesting) conversation between Harris and Nawaz akin to an interesting podcast. "Islam and the Future of Tolerance" is shorter. It is well worth the 1 credit I paid for it.
Audible should consider hiring Nawaz to narrate its books. A great voice and accent (not to objectify or to demean from the wisdom of his words).

It's read by the authors, and it sounds like they're new at it. The majority of the book sounds like two people reading letters that they've exchanged - not very natural.

I won't comment on the content or the authors' points of view. It it interesting, however, to hear their perspectives, and I would recommend it overall (as a supplementary purchase).

The postscript is much more natural sounding.

This dialogue has important messages for all of us living in these times. It is also a testament to open mindedness, tolerance and thus understanding. Excellent. I applaud the authors.
