Publisher's Summary

Two years ago, everything changed for the remaining members of the Seattle rock band Tempest. Two years is a long time.

Too long to keep on remembering.

Not nearly long enough to forget.

In trouble with nowhere else to go, songstress Lace Lowell seeks refuge with the band during their stop in New York City. It's a risky move for her because they are both there, two impossibly good looking men whose lives are inseparably entwined with hers. One who bruised her heart and one who smashed it into pieces.

Warren “War” Jinkins, the mercurial lead singer of Tempest, has always had a thing for Lace. But then again so does his best friend and band mate.

Bryan “Bullet” Jackson, the sinfully handsome tat-sleeved lead guitarist, has a bad boy reputation befitting his nickname. For the past two years Bullet's had a rule with the groupies: one time, never twice, leave 'em satisfied, but always leave 'em.

Two guys, one woman, and a host of dark secrets all together within the tight confines of a tour bus as the group travels cross country.

Can the past be forgotten and buried?

Will friendships prevail?

Or will the three of them succumb to seductive impulses too addictive to resist?

Irresistible Refrain is a gritty story intended for mature listeners 17 and up. Contains sexual situations, strong language, and drug use.

love the narration

Good book I love to listen to books with this kind of narration. It spoils me. When I listen to other books. Its really hard. Women can not do a mans voice and men can not do women's voices. This is a wonderful listen.

Wen and Kai strike again

absolutely loved this audio book.
the narrators nailed the characters.
I'm obsessed with Wen and Kai and their narrations. They bring books alive and manage to pull you into the story.

Miss Mankin thank you so much for this book and the issue of addiction.

I absolutely loved this book and Lace pulled at my heart strings.
I laughed with her, cried with her and wanted to reach through the speaker and hold her hand or give her a hug.
War made me want to commit a felony and that's all the time I'll give him.
Mr Brian had my in the edge I love that he was loyal to his friendship but wish he would of went all Alpha Male and taken control sooner.

Miss Mankin addressed an issue that is fast becoming an epidemic in the US and I love that she did the end of the book and the education provided was amazing .

Want to strangle them!

This book led me through a number of emotions~ the biggest being rage! I just wanted to strangle them and knock some sense into them. I get it- they had to go through what they did to end where they did but it was hard to endure. The ending made it worth it (thank goodness) but i still want to throttle them!

Narration was amazing. Wen and Kai gave a great performance~ I love their Duet style narration!

Kai and Wen's dynamics have a way of pulling you into the story and leaving you wanting more when the story ends.

The part of the story that really moved me was Lace's battle with drugs and her knocks in life.

So Many Emotions!

What made the experience of listening to Irresistible Refrain the most enjoyable?

First off, the narrators. They're amazing. Also, the music! I've never listened to an audio book with music in it. That just added something extra special to the story.

What did you like best about this story?

Other than the narrators and the overall story, I would have to say the realness of it. It was just honest, everything good, bad and in between. It felt real.

Which character – as performed by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross – was your favorite?

Brian was my favorite character. I'm not going to lie, Lace kind of annoyed me for quite a bit of the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

After Lace had overdosed and she was remembering the day she visited the cemetery. I'm not sure why, but that scene really got to me.

Any additional comments?

I felt so much while listening to this book. The author really knows how to draw you in and keep you invested. The writing is excellent. I can't say enough good things about the narrators. The only thing that I think could have made this a better listening experience would have been if the narrators actually sang the part that were songs. That would have been amazing.

Irresistible Refrain

Another outstanding story by Michelle.
She most definitely dose not write the typical romance.
Her character's have real life challenges, and learn to heal themselves. There are no damsels in distress more Prince charmings.
Wen and Kia bring these qualities to life. Their team work and comfort with each other add so much realism to the story. You find yourself on an emotional rollercoaster. Awrsome, awesome trifecta of talent.

An angst filled listen

Would you listen to Irresistible Refrain again? Why?

Yes I definitely would listen to this audiobook again, I really enjoyed the entire story that I listened to. Wen & Ross make the characters & emotions come to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Irresistible Refrain?

The scene when Lace was in the re-hab centre & she realises that she needs to be dependant on herself first before she jumps into any new relationships when she gets out.
Then there was the flashback to the prom scene... it was an awwww moment.

What about Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross ’s performance did you like?

You get this amazing sense of person for every character they voice, they become more real.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

gah, I hate these.... ummmm.... The long road we travel, when in love.

Any additional comments?

I've listened to Michelle's Magic series & found I couldn't wait to listen to her rocker series. Although the drug use in this made some scenes harder to listen too, the general darkness, then the angst between Brian & Lace, the flashbacks that lead to their choices over the years... made everything mesh together & create a vivid story.

Kai and Wen Are a Revelation

What made the experience of listening to Irresistible Refrain the most enjoyable?

I loved both Michelle Mankin's writing and Kai Kennicott's and Wen Ross's narration. Mankin writes characters that you absolutely fall in love with, and Kai & Wen make them come alive. They don't merely read the story aloud. They speak as the characters. They live the story, which made me feel like I was living the story, too.

What did you like best about this story?

This story fed my rock star romance habit and re-addicted me to this sub-genre. I loved the characters, the plot, the way Mankin told the backstory, everything. It’s funny because so many of the details in this book have been turn offs for me in some other books: a character that’s an addict, a band member with questionable character, hostility within the band. These are usually things I don’t enjoy because the fun part for me is the rock ‘n roll fantasy, and those elements, if overdone, kind of pop that bubble. I mean, I want a good plot with some conflict, but there have been some series that I haven’t continued because I found one of the band members to be too creepy to be redeemed or there was constant fighting between band members, which can be a downer, especially in a series where those other band members will become the leads. However, Mankin uses these elements and pulls it all off. She put her characters through the wringer and brought tears to my eyes a few times, but it paid off for them in the end. Refrain wasn’t so dark as to be a turn off. It was a fun romp while still being realistic, and it had some meaningful themes without being preachy or heavy handed. In fact, my only criticism would be a couple of minor mistakes in one scene about how the music industry, especially the putting on of concerts, works, but I’ve seen similar inconsistencies in just about every rockstar romance I’ve read so far, and it wasn’t enough to take me out of the story. In fact, I doubt anyone outside of the music industry would even notice. She got most of the details right and made you feel like you were actually on tour with the band.

The backstory is told through flashbacks, a lot of flashbacks, so be warned if that bothers you. It can bother me, and it took a little getting used to at the beginning, but the author made it clear what time period it was before any shifts, and it was an effective way to show details about the relationships between several of the characters instead of telling a long, boring narration before the main story even started. Also, the POV alternates between Brian and Lace, another device I often don’t like, but it was done very well here. The author divided the points of view by chapter and prefaced each chapter with either “Brian” or “Lace” so you’d know which character was narrating, even if you weren't listening to the audiobook. I enjoyed seeing both points of view and understanding the thoughts between each character’s actions. What annoys me the most about POV shifts is when you jump from one character in the middle of an important scene to another that’s not involved in that scene, so you have to wait to find out what happens. I hate that. It doesn’t happen in this book. I never felt frustrated that she cut away at a bad time. I think it worked particularly well in the audiobook because of the dual narration.

What makes a book for me, though, are the characters, and Mankin's characters make you want more. They are what addicted me to this series and made me love this audiobook.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It did make me cry in spots, especially the flashbacks to their childhood and at the climax of story. There may be some triggers for some people in this book.

Any additional comments?
