Publisher's summary

From USA Today bestselling author, Deanna Chase, the second book in the Crescent City Fae series.

Finding the perfect dress can be hell...especially when a stranger tries to gun you down in broad daylight. Void agent and magical baker extraordinaire, Willow Rhoswen has been anticipating her first date with Talisen Kavanagh since she was sixteen. After eight years of waiting, there are only two things that can stand in her way - an assassination attempt and a new game-changing drug.

Talisen's invented a new elixir that creates superhumans, ones that can rival vampire strength, and everyone wants it. Including the vampires. With Willow's life on the line, he makes a deal with the devil, while she's forced to accept the always-strings-attached protection from the most notorious vampire organization in New Orleans.

But when Talisen and his drug go missing, Willow will stop at nothing to find him, even if it means working with her vampire-ex, David. With souped-up humans, dangerous vampires, and more questions than answers, Willow has less than twenty-four hours to find him before everything changes forever.

Great story; hate the heroine.

She’s so whiny and selfish. Everything is me me me, but disguised as awareness and care for others. She acts like a petulant child. The story is great as far as plots go but this character irks me.

Like the story, hate Willow

As others have said, Willow is the worst! It is so hard to sympathize with her. Frankly, both of the love interests are too good for her. If she didn't have a unique magical ability, there would be absolutely nothing at all interesting about her.

Loved it!

This book picks right up where book 1 left off and immediately you are so caught up you dont want to stop listening. It is intense, full of danger and suspense. Non stop action and in the middle of it are Willow, Phoebe, David and Tal. The are so many conflicting emotions between David ,Willow and Tal and your not sure which way it will go or which way you want it to. Deanna Chase does very good at capturing our interests and keeping us that way! Loved it!!

Get it together!!

The main character had me yelling at her, if she was my friend she would be in a word of hurt because I would tell her about herself. First you want to help but you keep getting yourself into trouble and expecting someone to save her. Second, stop playing with these men hearts!!!

Deanna Chase always gives you more than you expect

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I think that Deanna Chase is one of the best series writers I have read. She builds on her characters and the life-long stories in a way that is gripping, endearing and complex all at once. I would definitely recommend both this series and her other series on Audible, the Bourbon street books.

What did you like best about this story?

This is book 2 in the Crescent City Fae series and I strongly recommend that you read these books in order as they include spoilers for previously books in the series.
At the end of the last book we were left with some pretty big information that turns into big plot in book 2. No longer a sideliner who is just there to support Willow, Talisen now takes some attention himself as a the creator of a powerful substance that is very open to criminal abuse.
I find it interesting how Deanna Chase takes good characters in this series and matches them to horrific creations that, while they may have good uses, are essentially the tools to create a horrific dictatorship or other overly powerful ruling body. It is mind boggling to see magic as both the gentle nature-focused happy moments in the main character's lives and the tools of world domination and subjugation simultaneously. The plot never takes it to a nightmarish place like that, but the combination of physical and psychological power that these two have created should make you stop and think.
That is something that really sets Deanna's books apart for me, the way she brings in such unexpected and often complex and interesting aspects to her seemingly lighthearted world. She gives you an intellectual pause while enjoying a page turning fun read, to think about some of the realities of magic of any kind in our complicated world where things can be used in ways the creator never intended.
This series has really grown on me, I honestly thought I mightn't enjoy it as much as the Jade series as it is not filled with the adults-only scenes that the Bourbon street series has in every book, but it has such a charm of it's own, the political machinations are so unpredictable, I love it.

Which character – as performed by Gabra Zackman – was your favorite?

I think my favourite character in this book is Maude, but I think if I get into a longer discussion of why it might cause spoilers!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes
