Publisher's summary

When the call came in over the radio, Sheriff's Deputy Rafe Franco thought he would be responding to a typical domestic dispute. But he didn't know that the perp was St. Louis's most notorious mobster - or that the victim was his college sweetheart, Lisa Tobin.

Now, as Rafe is drawn into a web of crime and danger, he discovers that his feelings for Lisa are stronger than ever. And her three-year-old daughter, Chloe, is melting his heart in ways he'd never imagined possible. But Lisa's ex is a powerful sociopath who will stop at nothing to get her back - or destroy her. As Rafe's instincts as a man battle with his duty as a cop, he'll do anything to ensure their survival…and their future as a family.

Lisa will do anything to get away from HIM~ 5 STAR

PLOT: Lisa must deal with her Psycho ex husband.

Officer Franco answers a call and finds the victim is his former lover Lisa. Lisa's ex husband Sloan breaks into her home and threatens her. Corrupt and Wealthy Sloan buys his happiness and freedom using any means both legal and illegal to get his "own way" in just about everything including his ex wife's life. When Officer Franco 'crosses' Sloan an he finds he is soon implicated in a murder and internal affairs is taking him to trial on a murder he did not commit. This is a very good story it holds the interest. I liked the heroine Lisa who is not a victim but a survivor. the real interesting character in this book is the Psycho Sloan who shows how a nut with money is still a nut. The reader is excellent and I really enjoyed the book due to her. I would give this book 5 stars all the way including the reader.

Yawn

Would you try another book from Alana Matthews and/or Connie Terwilliger?

Not likely to do either one. The narration was alright, if the story hadn't bored me so much it may have rated more stars.

Any additional comments?

This was a "I'll give it a chance" book. I should have given another one a try.

Just OK

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator for starters. Every time I head Connie's voice for Lisa, I kept thinking of a porn star, it was very distracting. The story line was okay, but Rafe and Lisa's characters were very underdeveloped.

What was most disappointing about Alana Matthews’s story?

Rafe & Lisa's characters. I never did fall in love with them. Rafe's character came across as entitlement to becoming a detective. He came across as "my who family's in law enforcement and doing well, so even though I'm only 25, I deserve my detective shield now". The book starts off with him disturbing a crime scene and stealing a piece of info from said crime scene, so he can follow up with the lead himself, even though he is only a street cop. Lisa's character came across as being a very weak person, and very willing to do what she was told. She didn't appear to have any backbone. Her backbone finally appears when she puts herself in very real (stupid) danger, in a sting operation that is so ludicrous and unbelievable, I wanted to scream. Rafe & Lisa just didn't seem to have any real depth to their characters.

How could the performance have been better?

A different narrator would have been better. Additionally book really needed a male narrator.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Way Disappointed! I bought it on sale, but what ever I paid for it, it wasn't worth it. I'm so glad I didn't waste a credit on it.

Any additional comments?

I'm usually a fan of harlequin romances, not this one. Bottom line - don't waste your money, credit or time.
