The reality Ingram discovers is wild and cruel, but filled with unexpected wonders. Though this young boy faces tornadoes, explosions, thieves, and rampant violence, his curiosity, humor, and resilience never dull.

As he begins to push against the tide of social and natural bad luck that seems to almost chase him, Ingram begins to forge himself into an individual with agency and the ability and right to choose his own moves, even if he’s not always prepared for the consequences.

Through Ingram’s journey, he begins to come to terms with a forgotten tragedy from his past that shapes the way he understands himself, his family, and his own place in the world.

Becoming

This is not only an original growing up and "coming of age story", but also an original becoming human story. The depth and simplicity of Ingrams journey left an imprint on me. The humanness, the Ingramness. A truly captivating story with suffering and joy... Thank you for sharing Ingram with us, Louis.

American Classic

Truly, in my heart, I believe if this book was written in a different time, when kids still read books, this would be considered an American classic. It felt like a book I would’ve read in school, like Hatchet, or Tom Sawyer even. The ending caught me off guard, I was expecting the story to keep going. I doubt Louis is going to write a part two. But all in all it was a perfect read. The pacing was good, the story was captivating. I listened to the whole thing in about 3 days. I looked forward to putting it on every day.

Brilliant and Captivating

I genuinely loved the story despite how painful of a journey Ingram had. The unique way he saw the world and experienced life was very innocent and lacking of self pity, it was a great reminder of how most of us get in our own way.

Louie C.K did an amazing job writing and narrating this story. I couldn’t stop listening to it during my work day!

TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE! (in my opinion)

This book was written by the author and novelist Louis C.K. He is the same human as the stand-up comedian many of us know as Louie C.K., though he is a different person, in my opinion.
Although writing jokes and speaking them out loud to an audience may seem similar, to some, as writing a novel and reading it out loud, they are quite different, in my opinion.
Sure, there is some mutual cross-over of talents and gifts that are helpful in the production of each performance. However, I would encourage consumers of this piece of literature, the audio version in particular, to judge it through a lens that can be found at a bookstore, rather than in a comedy club where Louie C.K., the stand-up comedian, is headlining.
In my opinion, this novel was written and read by Louis C.K. the author, not by Louie C.K. the comedian.
This story was brilliantly conceived, expertly written, and the audio book was read for us by the very thoughtful and talented novelist. I was delighted to listen to it.

Raw and real

A story like none other I have read or listened to, Ingram felt real to me. Survival, and the priorities of those who survive, are very different to Ingram than they are to the modern man. A bleak landscape and a bleak outlook punctured by tender and funny moments. Incredible work, hope to have more works from Mr. C.K. in future!

New American classic

Great character growth, very well thought out from a child’s mind as he grows and reflecting back on it as he grows.

Phenomenal

One of the most honest and wonderful audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. I couldn’t wait to get back to Ingram’s story and find out what happens next. Easily my favorite listen of the year.
