Publisher's summary

In a lightless world, only darkness can drive out darkness.

My name is Ethan Drake, and I’m a police detective. And I got plenty darkness to give.

So does my partner, who’s a demon, and frankly, a royal pain in my ass. But occult investigators are in short supply in the PD, so what are you going to do? Anyway, we just caught a bodysnatching case that has the stench of occult workings all over it. Seems someone wants to summon something bad into this world, something that threatens the very fate of humanity. I could care less about the fate of humanity myself, but hey, when it’s your job, you gotta do something, right?

Only my job has been made harder by a demon who’s decided it wants me as a vessel, and will stop at nothing until it gets what it wants. Internal Affairs are also gunning for my badge over the murder of some guy who deserved it, and on top of that, I’m trying to solve the murders of my ex-wife and daughter. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the snarkiest Hellicorn in the known universe.... You know that thing threatening all of humanity?

I might just let it succeed....

Harry Bosch meets John Constantine in this gripping urban fantasy noir thriller series.

It wasn't quite what I expected, it was better!

As a fan of supernatural, preternatural and horror genres, the summary of this series hit all the right keys. However, the summary didn't do it justice. I finished listening to the first three books on the 22nd of September and couldn't wait for the end of the month to get the other 3 book compendium with my monthly Audible credit. I bought more and immediately used one to get them. Great Job, N.P Martin and Brian Wiggins.

Accurate description

This series is a cross between Bosch and Constatine. Very entertaining and enjoyable listen. Not a everyday hero for sure but someone you can root for.

Great series

I like the flow of the books and the narrator is really good. I'm looking forward to books 4-6. I was sad when scarlet and cal died but I understand it can't always be happy in the books. Thanks for entertaining me!

could not listen beyond book 1

Love to get bundles so I gave it a chance. Struggled to get through book 1. Main character has no likable traits. No win situations seem to disappear with no effort. First book left me with no desire to continue the story.

Don't get this version

I don't see it noted anywhere, but this version is abridged and cuts out roughly 4hrs and 5m (based on the runtime of the 3 books individually).
Entire chapters are cut. Like chapter 2, the crime scene - in a cop book! Or the chapter where I can only assume he finds clues and has a chase scene to find out who a Main Villain is - it cuts from nothing important to suddenly interrogating some random cultist and his unconscious friend with something unknown happening in the other room. I rewound a few times trying to figure out what I had missed as the cuts are so extreme.
I made it to what this book calls chapter 7 before finding a kindle sample to compare. I've refunded this book as a result.

The story itself seems interesting, the main character is a damaged cop dealing with loss (from murdered parents as a boy,r to murdered wife and daughter recently). Demons and monsters are real and a small dept of the police has been created to deal with it. Small as in.. this one damaged cop & his dead and now possessed by a demon partner.

As another review I saw noted: the telepathic communication between Main Character and his hell goblins has some horrible sound effects that make it difficult to listen to. You can see what they were going for, but it didn't need to be so extreme. Otherwise the narration is enjoyable.

I enjoyed it enough that I'm going to get the standalone version of book 1 in the hope it's not a butchered abridged version.

First 3 books deal - brilliant!

Can’t believe that I got these 3 brilliant books for one credit. Usually if such a deal is on offer I would assume that the books were so-so at best. Not this time. Fast moving multi-layered plots, amazing array of imaginative, bizarre but well rounded characters and a tough, but moral code bound, protagonist. I can’t wait to read book 4 and will be recommending this hidden gem urban fantasy series to others who I know also like this genre.

Great story, great narrator

I wasn't sure about these books when I read the write up but must say I was pleasant surprised. I love the main character and his antihero style. The narrator's characterisations were seriously good and it was easy to differentiate between characters when having conversations. The books kept my attention and I found myself wanting to finish the books in one sitting. Brilliant! Would recommend and will be buying the next set in the series

Loved it.

I love these urban fantasy books having already read a few like Spectral detective from the uncanny kingdom collection, ( read the whole series) thought I'd try these 3 and I wasn't disappointed.
Made me laugh out loud a few times especially the antics of the 'hell bastards' and the hellicorn whom I enjoyed listening to very much.
Brian Wiggins voice was a pleasure to listen to and brought the characters to life with amazing detail which wasn't too much or over the top. Already purchased the next 3 books as i cant wait to see how the story unfolds and grows.
Nothing bad at all to say about the author, the storyline or the narrator. One thing I will say, which didn't bother me at all, is the colourful language used is explicit so if you're easily offended by swear words avoid these books.
If you love this genre with a strong main character, a detective with a story to tell but with laughs a long the way, then give these a try.

abridged version missing critical chapters

I had read a previous review stating several hours had been cut and that the story jumped around a lot with lots of important chapters missed. as it was 3 books for the price of 1 credit I gave it a go. .....but wish I hadn't. the chapters cut are not random flim flam that add nothing to the story but major events e,g trapped in a building with no way out surrounded by FBI....Next chapter all hunky dorey at a friends junk yard...wtf! my advice spend the extra credits and listen to the books one by one.

I wasn’t sure…

But am really glad I listened to these books. Great writing that includes everything you’d want, excitement, emotional highs and lows all bought to life with a great narration to boot! Off to find more right now!

better than expected

I picked this up on a whim, I had a credit to use and needed something new to listen to, it was considerably better than I expected, so much that I picked up the next 3 when I was only about half way through this one
