In the Service of the King

I like books like this where the vampires find their mates, but I guess I was hoping for more of King Kael’s backstory.
We do find out a little later that he has a previous mate. But I don’t know it kind of fell flat for me.

Shayla’s story too we don’t get enough of her, we only know a very small amount and it only leaves you wanting more.

I liked the narration actually the accents were really well done.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

Love those Vampire Bites

I read Seduced by the Vampire King before I read In the Service of the King because it was the first one available on audible. I was confused upon reading the book because I fought it started in the middle of this fascinating world. So I decided to Google the author and immediately realized that I was one book ahead of the series. When I read “In the Service of the King”, everything in book two come together and finally made sense. This book is a short read but packs a lot into those three hours. A little romance, some intrigue and world building makes this book worth a listen. This book really does sit the stage for the next book in the series. I was happy to see it finally become available on audible. And I love Brock's voice, why oh why, couldn't he have done the other two.

Scottish barbarian King meets the BDB!

I don't know. I'm seriously on the fence about this one. Something about it makes me hesitant to say that I don't completely like it or that I hate it. Although it is several shades of JR Ward's Black dagger brotherhood which I am a fan of. So maybe that's why part of it appeals to me. I don't know. Basically tortured vampire Keal who happens to be Scottish Liard and King of old is mourning the loss of his me 300 years ago, but has to keep up with the feeding on virginal offerings every so often since his lack of a mate prevents him from feeding on anything else. He disdains this ritual and has until he meets the lead female Shayla who has her own issues and were it not for the requirements of the ritual would be just as dominant, or has the potential to be as he is in this makes him intrigued with her. There's not much story here. It's just basically all mating ritual and denial of physiological attraction. I do think that the book had potential to be much more. Unfortunately, it is very short which is another reason that it does not appeal to me. I actually found myself rather intrigued it. Several moments until I would be thrown out of it by certain language uses during the more intimate sections. I like scorching scenes myself but sometimes I find that certain phrases used at certain moments don't seem to fit words like pussy and cunt tend to give me a dislike of any material no matter how much the characters or story appeals. Some people have an aversion to the word moist. Nothing turns me off faster than those two words used in sensual moments. That is my personal preference and I'm allowed to have it calm trying not to let that color my judgment here. It was interesting enough to keep me listening until the very end. My only other complaint was the very public and very erotic meeting ceremony being a contradiction, but I can't go into that without major major spoilers so I will say this. If you have a soft spot for Scottish Highland barbarian types and warrior vampires. This might be worth a few hours of your time at least once.… :-) On the narration the narration for something this short was decent, although I have to give them fair warning that my personal opinion of the narrator trying to do the females voice was rather annoying. I think this is one instance where they probably should have gotten an actual female to perform the female dialogue. It was very jarring to try to stay in the moment. Whenever the narrator attempted to do the female responses.

Extremely short!!!

This is closer to a novella than a full novel. It was extremely short and I feel a little cheated that I paid so much for it. However, it was a steamy little story that could be really developed into a great series.

Good story

This story is good, however short, and enjoyable. Great read when you want something quick to listen to. The narrator did a great job with various voices.

Ok, but not one of my favorite.

This was an ok start to the series. I really would have liked it more if there had been a bit more excitement. As is, the story takes place over about 48 hours which isn't bad, but it doesn't leave much room for the story to truly develop. I mean, for what was there, it was ok, but there just wasn't any real oomph behind the story. The story is a good start and there's definitely room for potential, growth, but I can't honestly say I will read this again. Also, I didn't really enjoy the way the narrator tried to do the female voice. I'm hoping the second book will be better, otherwise I can't say that I'll be able to finish the series. I'll just have to wait and see.

Rating 2.5 Stars

The only thing I liked was the idea of the warrior vampires fighting the killer vampires, as that is a different spin on the vampire world. Unfortunately, the story is lacking substance: it is too short, so they instantly fall in love and have a mediocre sex scene.

The next book is just as short and is about a different couple, so I can't imagine it further develops this story. I do not think I could be convinced to continue this series, even if someone offered me money.

Why such a low rating? A good start to a series.

I have looked at the reviews and the ratings for the story and I don't understand why it is rated so low. I personally enjoyed this quick story. I love anything paranormal and I love vampires. This falls right in my wheelhouse.

Kael rules a section of the world and he has decided that he no longer wants to have a mate because of what happened to his previous mate. Shayla has been one of many virgins that have been groomed in order to feed the Vampire King. When they are first introduced Kael is intrigued by her. He knows that there is something different and special about her but he cannot put his finger on it. When he nixes her with his fangs he realizes what makes her so special. She is a potential mate for him.

Even though this story was short we got a lot of information not only about Kale but also about Shayla's background.

One of the only issues that I have with the story is the fact that the next bookk in the series deals with another Vampire Ling verses Kale's vampire family. I absolutely adored Liam and I wish Liam got his own story but that did not happen. I am glad that I found this series because I am invested into figured out more about this world building that Laura Kaye created.

I love Brock Thompson. He is such a wonderful narrator and he makes me feel like I am part of the world that he is narrating. I don't feel like an outsider listening I feel like I'm right there observing what is happening.
