Publisher's summary

The epic adventure continues! As prophecy becomes reality, the factions struggle for control, only to further divide the lands. Some would say that King Andrew Alder foolishly agreed to support the Elves of the Reaches, sending men to aid their cause when the causes of all men in all lands were being put to the test of steel. And in the North, men back their words with action.

Against a backdrop of treachery and intrigue, murder and mayhem, the price of freedom is high. Many will pay with their lives. Many will succumb. For when alliances shatter, old hatreds rise anew and the plotting and scheming begin.

Bold, inventive, brilliantly imagined, In the Service of Dragons, Book Two is a novel of magic and wonder, a tale of pure excitement you will not soon forget.

Don't miss the rest of the In the Service of Dragons series.

A Fantasy Worth Reading

This book is one of the best books I've ever read. It is pure fantasy, modeled after Tolkien, but much more personal. I couldn't put it down. It's a great read, and it goes by all too quickly. Wonderfully written and beautifully told, I couldn't wait to start the next one.

Great for all ages!

This was one of the most literally enchanting books I have read all summer including the latest installment of the Harry Potter series. Great characters from the young hero Vilmos, to the mentor Xith, to the ally Seth, and the lovely Adrina, and of course Valam. Great writing, terrific adventure, a MUST READ for any fastasy fan. It has a mixture of Middle-Earth and Narnia elements. I find myself looking forward to the next installments more than any other book.

Totally awesome

Exciting...intense...interesting.... I absolutely loved this book - it is another great episode in the saga of the Men of the Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches. I liked this book because of all the action, mysteries and intrigue. I also like the way it focuses on multiple stories that depend on one another to fit in the story. I feel that it will appeal to Lord of the rings readers, Eragon readers, and Harry Potter readers. Overall I felt it was a good book that lots of people will enjoy. Be sure to listen to In the Service of Dragons #1 before this one.

Great continuation

In Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches, Stanek showed he was a master story teller. The Service of Dragons books are no different. Once again, great stories with great adventure and action aplenty. Great, great great!!!

Captivating!

I loved this book! It was one of the rare books that so fully absorbed me that I forgot to worry or think of anything else. It drew me into the lives of Adrina, Seth and Vilmos. The author is very descriptive in creating the characters, enabling you to envision the events as they unfold. Equally as important, the narrator was more than excellent. I've listened to it twice now, back to back. It's impossible to put down, and keeps listeners on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what will happen next. This is definitely one of my favorite books. I intend to share it with my children, who are huge Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fans. If you enjoy HP or LOR, you need to try it! You won't be disappointed!

A classic gem of its genre

My son is the avid fantasy reader in the family. Thanks to his recommendations I've read dozens of fantasy novels in recent years. Recently I've read and listened to Eragon and Eldest, The Kingdoms and the Elves 1-4, and In the Service of Dragons 1-2.

For my tastes, and this is a matter of opinion of course, Robert Stanek's Kingdoms and Dragons stories are better and deeper. Not only do they paint a much more richly envisioned world, but the reader gains a better understanding of the characters and their motivations. The writing is beautiful sparse, and I mean that in the best of ways. The author doesn't waste words, and has a rare gift for letting the reader learn about the characters through their actions and dialogue.

Stanek has earned a place in my bookcase among my favorite authors. I think he'll be one of your favorite authors too, right up there with Tolkien, Lewis, and other great fantasy authors. If you loved the other authors you will love Stanek. I cant wait for the third book to come out in audio, reading it in print just isn't enough.

Diappointed

While these two "books" were engrossing, they seem no more than a preface to the upcoming installments. The idea of charging for two audiobooks for what turns out to be no more than a 'teaser' seems unconscionable to me.

On top of that, the narrator has such an affected manner that it was almost impossible to listen to him. I had hoped that his stange style would fade from my consciousness after I became engrossed in the story, but it never did. I encourage potential buyers to listen to an audio sample of each book before purchasing.

Clearly, these are matters of opinion and taste, but I, for one, will not be finding out how this story ends.
