Publisher's summary

Film and television icon Gina Gershon may be best known for her movie roles in Bound and Showgirls and television appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm and How to Make It in America, but deep down she is a self-described cat lady. In Search of Cleo follows Gina’s desperation and despair when her assistant loses her beloved cat, Cleo. Gina spends two months roaming the back streets of Los Angeles at all hours of the night, searching for Cleo and meeting several quirky and outrageous characters who help or hinder her in different ways, including Ellen DeGeneres, who searches with Gina and recommends her pet psychic, Sonia; Arthur, the newspaper delivery man who gives her advice; and the mysterious fortune-teller, who appears from the shadows to give her a statue of Saint Gertrude, the protector of cats everywhere.

Gina soon finds herself enmeshed in L.A.’s strangest subcultures, doing everything she can to bring Cleo home, including chanting with a bunch of crystal-wielding hippies and being slapped with a chicken by a Santeria priest. Along the way, she reflects on the various cats that have been a part of her life and shares her travails as a single girl in search of both her cat and some sanity. In Search of Cleo will delight pet lovers and singletons alike as it introduces Cleo to the celebrated pantheon of literary cats that includes Dewey, Homer, and Oscar.

True Animal Lover

A beautiful story of life, love, forgiveness and “boundness” between a “fur baby and its pack leader”…Only a really spiritual individual might enjoy and understand this one, I truly did🪬💜

Loved it!!!

This was great! A cat lover myself, I TOTALLY understand what she went through. My cat disappeared for three days and we walked everywhere looking for her. This story hit every emotion from A to Z. I highly recommend this book. Thank you for writing such a touching story.

A Fun Listen

What did you like best about In Search of Cleo? What did you like least?

The best parts were her experiences in the back alleys of LA. I think she probably took some creative liberties with the characters but they were unique and their tales were interesting. I liked the musical interludes.

Would you recommend In Search of Cleo to your friends? Why or why not?

Sure, especially to my cat friends. Like the headline says, it's a fun read. I listened during my daily two hour commute and it kept my mind off the traffic.

Did Gina Gershon do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She's a good narrator and she brought the characters out with her interpretations.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

This Would Make a Good Movie

Wonderfully performed by Ms. Gershon, this story perfectly captures the LA that stereotypically everyone imagines.

Quirky but fun read!

Any additional comments?

Short but entertaining read. Ms. Gershon is naturally funny and that shines through her narration of the events leading to and involving the rescue effort of her cat, Cleo. The writing is down-to-earth and easy and the entertainment value just what you might need on a gray winter day. The quirky characters Gina ran into along the way of her quest sound like fiction but in Hollywood, totally believable. (I lived and worked there for many many years.)

I would recommend this book for the shear delight of a light and entertaining and genuinely funny "read." Thanks Gina!
