In My Shoes Stories from Women of Color

By: Karin Davis-Thompson
  • Summary

  • In My Shoes is a podcast about women of color and the issues we face but sometimes don't get to talk about. We will give our perspective, allowing you a glimpse into what it's like to deal with racism, infertility, mental illness, parenting, relationships, colorism, politics, hair, health, you name it - in our shoes. Sometimes it just takes a moment to hear a personal story to realize things aren't always the way they seem. When you hear someone's personal story you can see things through their eyes, from their perspective, even if it's just for a moment - but that moment may be all it takes to change the way you think about or view women from other cultural backgrounds and skin tones. Walk a mile in my shoes, and find out things aren't always the way they seem.

  • Season 1 Episode 2 - Struggling to Use the Words Mentally Ill as Part of My Daughter's Diagnosis
    Feb 13 2020

In this solo episode, I give you a little more information on why I started this podcast and blog: www.inmyshoestoday.com, why I had to grieve the loss of the relationship I thought I would have with my daughter and learn how to embrace our connection in order to give her what she needs to fight this battle for her mind.

I'll also tell you my experience as the only person of color in care giver support groups and what happened to me when I thought I was in a safe place to speak my truth, only to have my ability to really express myself crippled by the opinions of a group that should have been there to support me.

  • Season 1 Episode 3 Confessions of an Adoptive Mom
    Feb 20 2020

Adopting my babies has been one of the greatest honors of my life. But it never dawned on me that society might question my choice, or ask me questions and make comments that I can't believe anyone would be bold enough to actually say.

In this next to the last solo episode before our in-studio interviews begin, I'll tell you some of the craziest things people have ever said to me, how I handled it and how it made me feel.

And a little encouragement for anyone considering foster care and adoption. I can't say it is always easy, but it sure is worth it.
