Publisher's summary

Estranged from her husband through her failure to produce an heir, Lady Fieldhurst resolves to repay his neglect by taking a lover. Fate takes a hand when she and her would-be lover enter her bedchamber to find Lord Fieldhurst lying on the floor - with her nail scissors protruding from his neck.

Bow Street Runner John Pickett, 24 years old and new to the Bow Street force, has spent most of his brief career chasing petty thieves and pickpockets. Nothing in his experience has prepared him for low dealings in high society - or for the beautiful young widow who is the chief suspect.

For 18th century England lovers

Light, 'who-did-it' detective story with humor and intrigue. It kept me guessing to the end. The characters are a delight, they are all different, real and interesting. The reading perfect, with so many characters all done uniquely. The detective is no Sherlock Holmes, but you will keep rooting for him. I will definitely listen to the next book in the series.

Incredible narration, good story

This narrator made this book so much more than I could have had I read it.
I actually turned this audio off about an hour into it because I was lost and couldn't keep track of who was who. This happens to me when I'm stressed and listening in car between jobs (I am a pet sitter). I listened to something I didn't have to pay as much attention to and came back to this one later. So glad I did. I was able to catch up easily the 2nd time around and caught a great deal of humor I had not noticed first time. The lead character is charming and his love interest was almost inappropriate which really had me puzzled. I'm still a bit puzzled by that and definitely want to listen to more to see where it goes, if anywhere. The mystery is quite good and yes, there are plenty of twists to keep one a little off-balanced.
I was gifted this audio book for an honest review.

In Milady's Chamber

This was the first John Pickett mystery I read, & since, I have become a big fan. Watching his character develop over the course of Sheri Cobb South's 5 books (& 2 novellas), as well as watching Lady Julia grow up, has only endeared the stories to me all the more. Joel Froomkin's reading has brought to life nuances of the mystery that I previously had missed. The one caveat is Camille de la Rochefort's accent was difficult at times to understand. Overall it was highly enjoyable. Keep up the great work, Sheri & Joel.

Another favorite British whodunnit!

I've found another favorite whodunnit-historical-British series! I can only refer to Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie books, Rhys Bowen novels and more. This is something only British authors can do.

John Pickett is now 24 yo old and a Bow Street Runner and in this book he's challenged with his first murder mystery. The story contains amazing characters and many twists and turns. It's filled with a lot of humor as well and it's very hard to put down. If you're a sucker for a cozy, Brit mystery, you don't want to miss this!

Again Joel Froomkin did an amazing job with different voices and several British accents. It's like being there or watching a movie while you listen. I'm so happy to have found another great favorite narrrator!

Entertaining historical mystery

This was a very entertaining historical mystery. The characters have a lot of potential going forward and they mystery itself was quite solid. While I did figure out "whodunnit", I did not figure out the motive. While some reviewers state that it is a blend of mystery and romance, the focus is definitely on the mystery with a very minor side of romance, in my opinion. For most of the book it was more of a one-sided infatuation or crush. There was, however, a hint of possible romance in future books.

As far as the audiobook narration, I was not as enamored with the reader as many of the other reviewers were. I felt that his voice sounded way too old for a 24 year old main character. It threw me off a bit, making me think Pickett was much older than he was supposed to be. I eventually got used to it, but it wasn't ideal in my opinion. The reader did a very nice job using distinguishable voices between the different characters. I think his male voices were far better than his female ones (though that is often the case with male readers in general, I think). I'm not 100% sure I would listen to another in the series but I would read one in print. I suggest listening to the sample, if the voice doesn't sound too old for the character and you like it, consider giving the audio a try. Otherwise, I do recommend the book in print.

Fun, clean series.

Have enjoyed the characters and story. I do wish the excellent narrator had given Picket a bit more spunk and personality. He seems shaky voiced and hesitant. A little here and there would make sense, but having him sound that way throughout makes him less appealing.

Fun mystery

A delight to follow the unfolding of the mystery and the intriguing characters. It was an adventure to follow Pickett as he sought to find the true culprit.

Fun!

First off, the narration for this book is fabulous! Joel Froomkin did a remarkable job narrating all the different characters, but his “upper crust” accent is just so spectacular. If you’re a fan of period pieces and murder mysteries, then you will probably really like John Pickett. He is very charismatic without being arrogant, and he is somewhat relatable given the circumstances. In Milady's Chamber is well written and highly enjoyable, and a great start to a new series.
