Publisher's summary

About 1,000 years ago, the great Indian pandit and yogi, Dipamkara Shrijnana (Atisha), was invited to Tibet to reestablish the Buddhadharma which had been suppressed and corrupted for almost two centuries. One of Atisha's main accomplishments in Tibet was his writing of the seminal text A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, in which he extracted the essence of all 84,000 teachings of the Buddha and organized them into a clear, steplike arrangement that makes it easy for any individual practitioner to understand and practice the Dharma. This genre of teachings is known as lam-rim, or steps of the path, and forms an essential part of every school of Tibetan Buddhism.

In this book His Holiness the Dalai Lama gives a commentary to not only Atisha's revolutionary work but also to Lines of Experience, a short lam-rim text written by Lama Tsong Khapa who was perhaps the greatest of all Tibetan lam-rim authors. In bringing together the teachings of Atisha, Lama Tsong Khapa and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, this book offers listeners one of the clearest and most authoritative expositions of the Tibetan Buddhist path ever published. It is highly recommended listening whether you are at beginning, the middle, and the end of the path. These teachings were given by His Holiness in Los Angeles in 2000 and were sponsored and published by Thubten Dhargye Ling in partnership with the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive.

The Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive (LYWA) is the collected works of Lama Thubten Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche. The Archive was founded in 1996 by Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the Archive’s spiritual director, to spread the Dharma for the happiness and benefit of all beings in as many ways as possible. An essential book for those interested in Lam-Rim

This is another great book taken from the talks of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The book is based on an essential ancient text and very clearly explains the fundamentals of Buddhism. What I enjoyed most is the practical nature of the book and it's immediate applicability in our daily life. A must read

A true lesson.

I have both read and listened to several other books on this subject and this was the best so far. I learned something from each book and consider them all valuable but this came across as a true lesson.
The narrator I feel did an exceptional job of portraying this In a way so as I felt I was listening to the teachings of the Dalai Lama himself rather than just a translation. That combined with great content on how to comprehend and understand emptiness led me to give this a 5 star rating.
Anyone looking for answers with how to deal with stress, anxiety or depression will benefit greatly from the philosophy contained here.
EXCELLENT!

Perfect

Perfect teachings, perfect intentions, perfect everything. 10/10 fantastic. A review of this work will always fail to get across the true meaning and value of such a teaching. If this is free, get it and listen. If not, it is worth whatever is the asking price. Get it and listen. 10000 blessings upon who ever reads this and may good fortune and compassion follow you all the days of your life

how to learn

The writing style feels very much addressed to the reader, as if the Dalai Lama wrote this with you in mind, as opposed to some of his other books which are just transcripts of some of his lectures.
I think the main lessons in this book were about how to follow the path to enlightenment, how to prepare your body and mind, how to find a teacher, how to know what is the right path and what are the right practices. I think the text is written very well, better than some other of His Holiness's books that I have read. Brian Nishii as narrator was good but not 5 stars.

It was alright.

I found the narration perfect. The text was as good as one can get when attempting to explain the universe using a single paradigm.

EXCELLENT

This is a book with a lot of information, too much to absorb for a “one time listen “.
As with his other books, the Dalai Lama, is an excellent teacher.
Brian Nishii is the right choice. It is a joy to listen to his voice.
My thanks to all involved for making this book available to us, JK
