Publisher's summary

Separated from friends and family and haunted by personal demons, park ranger Anna Pigeon finds solace in the quiet ruins of the Anasazi civilization of Colorado's Mesa Verde. But the rugged beauty of the park and the mystery of the Anasazi are cruelly overshadowed by danger and death. Lately, visitors to Mesa Verde have been bringing home more than photos - they're also carrying a strange, deadly disease, and once it strikes, Anna Pigeon must find the very human source of the evil wind.

Terrible Production - couldn't finish

I love Nevada Barr novels, but the production was so fuzzy and the volume so wonky that I could not finish listening to this book. If I had the volume up loud enough to hear a low-pitched voice my ears would get blasted when a higher-pitched character spoke. Plus it was often fuzzy sounding.

Sound is bad

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I could barely hear the narrator, even when I turned the volume up.

What was most disappointing about Nevada Barr’s story?

The story was good.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was probably very good, as this narrator is usually great, but the sound quality was awful.

Did not finish due to bad sound quality!

The narrator would speak clearly at a high volume for a couple of sentences then drop to almost a whisper level. This up and down volume level made it impossible for me to set the volume to a bearable level and still catch everything. I got frustrated and gave up on it about half way through.

The book itself is probably good if you can hear enough of it to be able to follow it.

Uneven sound

Either the narrator or the production is of extremely poor quality which is uneven in volume and most sentences trailing off to inaudible sounds. Very irritating. I deserve a credit refund.

Audio is terrible

I generally enjoy Barbara Rosenblat's narration -- but this production is terrible -- the audio quality is so poor. Audible should do an automatic credit to anyone who has had issues with this work.

Sound quality is abysmal

Like so many others have already written, the recording of this book is unacceptable. The story is good, the narration is great, but the engineering of the sound is abysmal. I tried calling customer service and was told that they might have to totally re-record it with a completely different narrator. That was after she told me that the poor sound quality was probably a theatrical technique where the narrator dropped her voice to make it more haunting or suspenseful. The customer service agent was courteous, but completely clueless about the book itself or the narrator. The two or three minute clip that she listened to could not possibly have given her a good picture of the overall poor quality of this particular recording. I requested that it be referred to the sound engineers so that they could check the master recording and see if perhaps it was a technical glitch when it was duplicated. I was very frustrated by the encounter with customer service.

Audio mix

This audio mix is terrible. No midrange at the beginning of the book and volume/consistently throughout varies. Needs to be re-mixed.

Love the narrator!

good book. poor revording

Good story. love Nevada Barr books. This was the first one that I had a problem hearing .Half of the book sounded like it was recorded with a blanket over the microphone. This one is better read than as an Audible.
