L'ordine dei Templari nacque a Gerusalemme come conseguenza della prima crociata del 1096 e circa venti anni dopo, nella città di Troyes, ricevette una Regola monastica. Fu solo a Roma, tuttavia, che ottenne i crismi della sanzione apostolica.
