Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) nasce nei sobborghi di Londra, figlio di un mercante di candele presbiteriano. Si dedica fin da giovane agli affari, avviando nel corso della propria vita innumerevoli attività. Incarcerato prima per bancarotta (1692), poi per blasfemia (1702), sconta la pena umiliante della gogna. Separatosi dalla moglie, non rivedrà mai più i suoi sette figli, dedicandosi, da allora in poi, esclusivamente al giornalismo. Quelli che diventeranno i suoi maggiori romanzi, pubblicati negli ultimi anni di vita, vengono da Defoe spacciati per storie vere, al fine di venderli e pagare i suoi molti debiti. Considerato, anche per questo aspetto picaresco, il padre del moderno romanzo inglese, è passato alla storia con capolavori quali "Robinson Crusoe" e "Fortune e sfortune della famosa Moll Flanders".
