È la notte di capodanno a Roma. Niccolò e Livia litigano per l'ultima volta, si lasciano, lei scappa via in motorino e fa un incidente, scivola sui sampietrini che quella notte sembrano diamanti ed entra in coma. Il nuovo anno comincia così, con Livia distesa a occhi chiusi su un letto d'ospedale e con Niccolò che la va a trovare ogni giorno.
Niccolò ha perso entrambi i genitori, vive con Tommaso, il fratello più piccolo, in una casa che confina con quella dei nonni. Lavora per la tv, organizza il palinsesto di un canale dove vanno in onda commedie, serie e sit-com americane. Ma più Niccolò trascorre il suo tempo con Livia, più gli passa la voglia di ridere e di lavorare.
Un giorno gli viene un'idea: prende il computer che la madre di Livia ha lasciato in ospedale e decide di scrivere la sua prima lettera d'amore per raccontare alla sua ragazza quello che sente, quello che gli succede attorno, nel loro gruppo di amici o in paesi lontanissimi, insomma, tutto quello che lei si sta perdendo di quell'anno.
Tra le notizie di cronaca, i terremoti, le elezioni americane, il referendum sulla Brexit, Niccolò prova a raccontarle la realtà, mentre si accorge che il mondo, che insieme a Livia sembrava un posto così familiare, va avanti anche senza di loro.
È vero che nulla accade per caso? Esiste l'effetto farfalla? Ha senso cercare una casa anche se sai che non andrai mai ad abitarci? Ci si può innamorare di una persona che non abbiamo mai visto? L'amore è più forte della paura di morire?
Queste sono solo alcune delle domande con cui Niccolò affolla le sue lettere a Livia e soprattutto a se stesso, mentre piano piano scoprirà che scrivere è l'unico modo per salvarsi dalle paure e dai fantasmi, dal timore dei cambiamenti, e che Livia, ancora una volta, sembra l'unica persona in cui cercare tutte le risposte.
