Iniziato il 6 ottobre 1935 durante i giorni del confino politico, "Il mestiere di vivere" accompagna Cesare Pavese fino al 18 agosto 1950, nove giorni prima della sua morte, e diventa a poco a poco il luogo cui affidare i pensieri sul proprio mondo di scrittore e di uomo e, soprattutto, le confessioni ultime su quei drammi intimi che laceravano la sua esistenza.
