Tracce che soltanto Marcus, cacciatore del buio addestrato a riconoscere le anomalie sulle scene del crimine, può interpretare. Perché Marcus è sì un prete, ma appartiene a uno degli ordini più antichi e segreti della Chiesa: la Santa Penitenzieria Apostolica, conosciuta anche come il tribunale delle anime.
Ma il penitenziere ha perso la sua arma più preziosa: la memoria. Non ricorda nulla dei suoi ultimi giorni, e questo dà un enorme vantaggio all'assassino. Soltanto Sandra Vega, ex fotorilevatrice della Scientifica, può aiutarlo nella sua caccia.
