La sesta indagine del commissario De Vincenzi parte da un malfamato albergo di Milano dove è stato rinvenuto l'orribile cadavere di un uomo. In pigiama da notte, coi piedi nudi all'aria, e il ventre aperto da un fianco all'altro. Ma è attorno ad un candeliere dalle sette braccia attorno al quale si snoda una spy story che porterà il commissario a seguire una bella donna bionda e un'acrobata fino in Medio Oriente, all'esordio della questione palestinese.
Nonostante sia stato scritto in pieno regime fascista, i personaggi positivi del romanzo sono gli ebrei, ulteriore prova dell'audacia e dell'anticonformismo di De Angelis, maestro del giallo "all'italiana".
