Historical Romance with a twist!

Any additional comments?

Love the story of a family with special "gifts" helping a man who's family is possibly up to no good. I enjoyed this because is wasn't too much special. Just a little extra help to help us through life, may it be forsight, vision of a pending danger or just a little know-how out of the ordinary to keep you from turning that corner where the evil person lies in wait for...is definately the type of person, er...family that I want on my side!

I truely enjoyed this one, and I'm looking forward to the rest. I will say that although I've listened to other books narrated by Ashford and had no problems at all, this one seems that she was a bit off her rythm. She's wonderful with the female parts but the male characters all seem the same and very stiff. Not much inflection on their emotions other than, stern. But I still liked the story and will listen to the rest. Maybe she'll get into the swing of things later...we'll see!

STORY: GREAT!! NARRATOR: ???

I'm a true fan of Hannah Howell and her writing talent is outstanding. So WHY Ashford MacNab??? There are so many others that would make this story so much more enjoyable. I'm sitting on the edge of a decision to-buy OR not-to-buy! Because it's a continuation and I enjoyed the story so much, I guess I'll suffer through one more and maybe...just maybe it'll be better. Ashford MacNab doesn't have the ability to successfully distinguish the voices of the characters. Many times, I had to carefully listen to the subject of conversation to be sure who was talking. I certainly don't mean this to be disrespectful, but Ashford MacNab is at the very bottom of my choice of narrators list. Tis a pity...it's truly a GREAT story!

Get A Different Narrator!

I've read & listened a many books by Hannah Howell & enjoyed them, she tells a great story. I couldn't even get lost the first chapter of this book the narrator was shook bad! Absolutely NO emotion in her voice! Which is truly sad because she had a pleasant voice & her make and female voices were obvious. But besides the changes in each character's speaking voice she might as well have been reading a dry textbook. I couldn't listen to it, if I want to joke what happens I'll have to read the actual book myself

Attack of the robot

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The story is good, though I have not been able to finish it, as the narrator is a bit like nails on the chalkboard for me. Hannah Howell is a good writer, not too formulaic for a romance novelist. The beginning of the story draws me in, but she looses me a bit towards the middle. TBD if it gets better towards the end. I think I might have to read it instead of trying to listen to it if I want to finish it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Leo...just, seems yummy.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

At first, I didn't think she would bother me, but she is monotone and her sentences are so clipped, she sounds like a robot. It is driving me up the wall! I figured she was no Anne Flosnic during the sample, so decided to give it a go, but how no one told her, "Hey, when you awkwardly pause after ever sentence, and give no tonality to the words you are saying, it makes me want to hit you in the face with a brick," I have no idea. Don't let the sample fool you, it gets worse.

Could you see If He's Wicked being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really...not that it isn't good enough, but I am not sure how Chloe or her talents would transfer...

Any additional comments?

I wish I could recommend this, as it is an intelligent book, but the narrator is awful.

Good story, so so narration.

This was a pretty good story. I really liked the heroine, she was funny, witty and smart, not the whimpering, simpering chew on bottom lip heroine. The hero was okay too, I would have liked him a bit more sexy and arrogant, but not a bad arrogant. The H and H did have some good chemistry and there are some nicely written sex scenes, not to graphic, just the right amount.

The story line and plot were very good. The villains were definitely villains! Oh my... they were bad. LOL

There as so much dialogue throughout the entire book which was fantastic. (I like lots of dialogue)

I really liked some of the secondary characters as well. Looking forward to Leopold's book for sure.

As for the narration. It was just okay. The narrator seemed so monotone and a bit robotic throughout the entire book. She really needs to put some emotion in her voice. The men sound like men which is good but still some emotion would be great.

Good story....

terrible narrator. most of the voices sounds like a robot with inflections.... mostly all of the male voices. But the story starts off with a bang and keeps you interested. The end is the best and funniest part. the narrator does her best voices there!

Narration ruined it for me.

I love Hannah Howell so I was excited to read If He's Wicked.Since I really like her books I'll start with what I liked:

The story line was original and something I haven't come across in historical fiction.

I didn't know I would like the paranormal aspect but I did!

Chloe was smart, sweet, and easy to like. I liked her confidence a lot. Julian I liked less but I still liked him. He was open minded about Chloe's "gift" even when he was entirely sure he believed in it. He accepted Leo and the whole troop with a willingness I was surprised by.

I loved Leo. He was sarcastic and mysterious and I want more of him! In fact, I loved all the secondary characters, including Modrid, Lady Evelyn, and Lady Marstan

The villains were truly villainous. I wish we had spent more time with them to find more of their crimes or had seen them commit them rather than just hear about them. They were wicked and evil!

What I didn't like:
The narration was horrible. The men were monotone and droned on like robots. The only time the narrator had any inflection at all was when she read as a child or as one of the older women. She couldn't even muster up inflections for the villains who should be the most fun! I want to listen to the other books but I really don't know if I can put myself through another 10 hours of the droning, even at 1.25 or 1.50 rate. It's seriously that bad. I'm not sure who makes the narration decisions but this was a complete miss for me.

I didn't appreciate Chloe and Julian living like a married couple while he was still married to Beatrice. Yes, she was awful, yes he didn't consider himself married anymore but that's kind of too bad because he was still married. I thought that was handled in poor taste.

Like I said earlier, I wish we had actually witnessed more of the evilness of the villains rather than hearing about it all second hand.

I will probably read the next one rather than listen to it though.

Enjoyable & Unique series

The story and the characters and the narration are all entertaining. Howell writes an enjoyable romance with a believable paranormal twist. The extended family is followed through the series and MacNab does a wonderful consistent job with all the family. Sexy encounters and loving relationships continually keep each book engaging. A sensual romance that is off the beaten path. Great job.
