Publisher's Summary

A classic thriller from the best-selling master of action and suspense.

The atomic submarine Dolphin has impossible orders: to sail beneath the ice floes of the Arctic Ocean to locate and rescue the men of weather station Zebra, gutted by fire and drifting with the ice pack somewhere north of the Arctic Circle.

But the orders do not say what the Dolphin will find if she succeeds - that the fire at Ice Station Zebra was sabotage and that one of the survivors is a killer....

the end of an 18 years read!

Wy 18?i bought this book for one Egyptian pound in my hometown mansoura 18 years ago and read very few lines then it was one of huge pile of books removed by my mother for being lagging in my college and filling the house with books this of course was supported by my father. Now they're both gone and I graduated long time ago.May they rest in peace .For the book i read it listening at the same time.Excellent experience the narrotor had a very good grasp of the reading process may have misread one word across the whole book. The story itself is a whodunit in the cold war era showing meticulous details about navy life that I was sure the author was working in the field which I found it to be true.I wish there were few more pages after the final revelation but it's ok.Happy I could read it after all this years

Much Much Better Than The Movie

I have seen the movie numerous times. The book was very different and far better. Jonathan Oliver is a great narrator for this book. I heartily recommend this book.

Not the Movie, but still good

If you have seen the movie then the story here is similar for the first third to half of it, but it changes afterward. In fact the book is less cold war spy thriller ala the movie, but more arctic murder mystery.

The story is generally good, varied and interesting with a few moments that Macleans just about gets away with. There are some errors, for instance the mannicker schoenhower one (they never made pistols), but in general it is a good listen and worthy of a credit.

Where most of the recently release Maclean books fall down, is in the narration. Jonathan Oliver is ok and just about bearable in this one, unlike the Guns of Navarrone and Where Eagles Dare. He does better with the normal narration here, but he struggles to maintain the American accent, and I am not convinced with the irish and scottish ones. Some times he is good, sometimes it hurts my ears, which leads to a mixed response on my part.

Daring do!

This was a very old fashion feeling audiobook. Not as this is a bad thing. It felt like those Sunday afternoon films when the English guy is the plucky hero. The narration fits the lead character, but some of the other parts made me laugh! The ending was a little rushed. But all the scenes on the sub and ice station are very good.

Old school!

Revisited a book I read at school. Old school but engrossing and gripping. Wasn't sure about the narrator at first but actually he was very good.

A classic submarine yarn

This is a classic submarine yarn although it rather loses its way in the last act which is more murder mystery. Several differences from the film of the same name although Patrick MacGoohan' s portrayal is always in the back of one's mind.
