Publisher's summary

From the best-selling author of the Supervillainy saga

Jane Doe is a weredeer, the least-threatening shapechanger species in the world. Blessed with the ability to turn furry at will and psychically read objects, Jane has done her best to live a normal life working as a waitress at the Deerlightful Diner. She has big dreams of escaping life in the supernatural-filled town of Bright Falls, Michigan, and her 18th birthday promises the beginning of her teenage dreams coming true.

Unfortunately, her birthday is ruined by the sudden murder of her best friend's sister in an apparent occult killing. Oh, and her brother is the primary suspect. Allying with an eccentric FBI agent, the local crime lord, and a snarky werecrow, Jane has her work cut out for her in turning her big day around.

Thankfully, she's game.

Set in the same world as Straight Outta Fangton.

Pun after pun

So this book is pun after pun because well what dear you going to do. I’m sure the authors wife was just shaking her head as he probably had dear puns on the brain for a long time when working on this.

Like True Blood but better

I like a light hearted and fun story, and as soon as I saw the title of this book I was interested. Ten minutes into the audio I was thinking to myself that this had some striking resemblences to True Blood, the HBO show and the Sookie Stackhouse series. The similarities are superficial, and C. T. Phipps & Michael Suttkus do not go into the dark places that was portrayed there. I normally do not enjoy YA stories anymore, but this one really worked and its quirky heroine, Jane Doe, really sold the story.

When he brother is accused of murder, Jane must figure out the true culprit and save him. Jane is not happy with her life, and does not really feel like she fits in with the rest of her family, and it turns out that the murder mystery is just what she needed to blossom. Her character is great fun, and if my daughter were still a teenager I think she would have enjoyed her a lot.

Arielle DeLisle brings a lot to the table as a narrator. She is very pleasant to listen to and carries a lot of emotion in her voice. She really brings Jane to life, and you feel like you've known her for a long time. She is a real treat. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

My favourite by this author!!

Jane Doe is a Weredeer, which took her a little while to fully appreciate seeing as she sees herself as the least threatening of the shifters. But she is still a formidable girl and everyone is about to realise just how special she is. When her brother is arrested on suspicion of murder, Jane is called in to use her ability to read objects to help with the investigation. What follows is a story filled with dorky references, suspense, fun, more dorky references and plenty of twists.

I've loved pretty much all the books that I've read by this author, but this one is definitely my favourite! I was captivated with the word right from the start and devoured the book as quick as I could. When reading a book by this author, you know there is going to be geeky references but this one was chock a block with them, and I loved it!! So many times I was smirking and sniggering at them!

Jane Doe was an amazing character. She is plucky, brave, geeky, and very relatable. I loved that she is a deer and not one of the more popular shifters like wolf or cats. Her family always makes deer puns, hence her name and the name of the diner. I also loved her best friend Emma. Emma is a wolf, but the two of them work so well together. Both the girls work with an FBI agent and a ganster. These guys have plenty of secrets of their own and I loved finding them out along with Jane!!

The world the author has created is fantastic!!! I see it's set in the same world as Straight Outta Fangton, which I haven't read yet but must do so soon!! I loved all the different supernatural creatures and learning more about the world. Seeing how the shifters are treated by the humans brings to mind a lot of the issues we see now. It shone a spotlight on certain issues but in a way that wasn't overbearing.

In all, this was an excellent read. The plot was fascinating and filled with secrets, suspense and fun, the characters were all amazing and brilliantly written. Jane Doe reveals some incredibly shocking secrets that rock the foundation of their society! I am eager to see what else the author has in store for these characters and this world!!

I really enjoyed Arielle DeLisle narration. While her tones and voices were all similar, she gave enough subtle changes to make it easy enough to follow who was talking. Her infections and cadences brought the book to life, and her performance was nearly flawless.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

A "deer-lightful" story

This was such an adorable, silly, brilliant, wonderful, and all around just lovely story. Jane Doe is great fun to travel through the story with, and I enjoyed being introduced to her world, monsters and all. While I wouldn't say it's a "coming of age" story, there is still a lot of growth and figuring out the world is not what she thought it was, or anywhere near as simple, going on that I found interesting to observe and reflect on along with Jane.

There is a lot of geek/pop culture humor in here that I greatly enjoyed, when I got the reference, but wasn't a detraction in any way when I didn't get the reference.

C.T. Phipps and Michael Suttkus also had a good balance between romance/sex positive vibe and action adventure story, all of it at a YA appropriate level.

Arielle DeLisle did an amazing job as narrator, capturing each character beautifully. It was my first time listening to a book narrated by her and I look forward to hearing more from her.

Witty, well written and amusing

I Was a Teenage Weredeer by Charles Phipps and Michael Suttkus was an excellent audiobook.  The story takes place in Bright Falls, Michigan.  The town, for the most part, consists mainly of supernatural beings – vampires, shapeshifters, witches, Shaman’s, werewolves and more.  Magic is prevalent in this story as is the spirit world and the world of puns … a curse for the Weredeer!

Jane Doe discovers that not everything is as it appears – there are family secrets, deadly pacts, and revenge plots.  Jane finds herself smack dab in the middle and must discover not only the secrets and defeat the Big Bad Wolf but that she must also discover her true self.

Witty, well written and amusing.  The dialog flowed naturally moving the story along at a good pace.  The action and plot were cleverly executed.  New Detroit was mentioned several times so the story is in the same time frame as Straight Outta Fangton.

I enjoyed the characters and felt the authors did an excellent job of developing them.  I would have liked to have learned more about mom’s secret dealings but there was enough there to let people know she was NOT a good person – not evil but absolutely and undeniably NOT a good Weredeer!  I thought the authors did a great job of word-playing (puns, sarcasm, personification, etc) -  just perfect for the story.

Arielle DeLisle gave a wonderful performance; she did not stumble over the puns or other tropes. She was solid in her performance keeping the voices straight.  I found her voice entertaining and calming as well.  It was pitch perfect.

I enjoyed this book and while it comes across as a Young Adult, it is for anyone who enjoys supernatural and mystery genres.  I look forward to reading more about Bright Falls!

Nearly Perfect and a Blast of a Book

4.75 out of 5 stars

In my head when I’m writing this description I can hear the slow (and just flute version of) Morning Mood by Edvard Grieg (Youtube) because that’s what I hear when I’m thinking of a place called Bright Falls where people aren’t just people anymore. They are shifters that make up different classes and animals. There are Werebears and Werewolves and then you meet Jane Doe (aptly named) the main character who is a Weredere. She just turned 18 and is trying to work her way into enough money to get out of Bright Falls when her best friends sister turns up dead in an apparent murder. Recruited to find the murderer by her friend Jane Doe’s life will never be the same.

There are some authors that you realize that you like anything they write even when it’s not in a ‘typical’ genre. C.T. Phipps is that author for me. This is at least the third unique genre I’ve read that he’s written and I’ve liked them all. I Was a Teenage Weredeer (though the name and cover art did catch my attention) wouldn’t normally be a book that I thought “Yup! I have to read that” but… now I’m mad at myself for not thinking that. I Was A Teenage Weredeer was a blast from beginning to end.

Phipps and Suttkus kept cracking me up – all of the deer puns and the interaction between the different shifter species was great. Along with the hallowed history of Bright Falls and the mysterious “aura” and feeling that surrounded the town. I also didn’t know going into it (I don’t always read the entire synopsis for fear of spoiling the book) that this was going to be set in the same world as Straight Outta Fangton.

I Was a Teenage Weredeer while being a mouthful to say was one of those books that just got my sense of humor. As I mentioned above – the puns were great (and the notion that one of the stereotypes about weredeer were these bad deer-related puns). The premise of the book (a town is cursed and they must find a murderer) sounds typical but what Phipps and Suttkus do with it is far from that.

While not a perfect book it’s darn close. I ended up finishing this in less than two days because I couldn’t put it down. It should come with a warning telling you that you might lose sleep until you finish it.

I Was A Teenage Weredeer is a book for those who don’t take everything too seriously. A fantasy book that will make you laugh and a story about friendship, magic, and finding out who you really are all wrapped up into one.

The narration for this was done by Arielle DeLisle, who I thought did a fantastic job of bringing Jane to life. It was one of those voices that were so good that it’s hard to pull Arielle from Jane in my mind now.

I was voluntarily provided with a free copy of this book. It has not affected my review in any way. If you enjoyed this review, please vote for it! Every vote helps.

Not for me

I liked this book to begin with but as the story progressed I found the character to good to believe. There is a sort off love triangle. She had nobody then she has two guys lusting after her and it felt too predictable, more so in the character as well as the plot. This could be a contempary story with social issues only the author changed it and turned it into a fantasy. I found the main character to be really naive, which I find really hard to believe and to top it off she is the one to solve the mystery and help save the day.
I thought this book would be a clean story for YA due to the title and cover, however that is deceptive. I would say this is more for New adults. They discuss and use drugs, sex (polygamy, discussion about who they slep with, it sound like it is the norm for majority of the characters to do) it has violence and social issues.
This book is not for me but it might be for others.

A Blend of Everything Awesome!

Like taking a trip down Buffy the Vampire Slayer lane, only snarkier and much more entertaining. It takes a remarkable pair of authors to capture the pure fun of a legend like Buffy, and then hook me with an enthralling new world. C. T. Phipps and Michael Suttkus have done just that.

Welcome to Bright Falls! You have your geeky-but-cool teenage weredeer, Jane Doe (who can read objects à la King’s The Dead Zone), in a tight-knit town of animal shifters, where the oldest, strongest families rule. Respect is critical for community harmony, and while traditions might be fading, you don’t dare step a hoof out of line. Jane Doe must break a lot of rules to find out who killed her best friend’s sister and stop a powerful entity from enacting revenge on the shifter families. Shameful, deadly town secrets will be uncovered, stereotypes will be challenged, and enemies will unite to keep Bright Falls safe. Lest I forget, there is a crafty FBI agent and a smoking hot crime lord that melt right off the pages.

The magic system, the relationships, the leap-off-the-lines personalities should not be missed! Definitely would put I Was A Teenage Weredeer on par with another favorite of mine, Rachel Aaron and her Nice Dragon’s Finish Last, Heartstrikers series.

Arielle DeLisle’s narration transports you right into the book. She has such an incredible range of voices. Her timing, her inflection are spot on!
