Story
Alcohol is an intense, addicting poison that will slowly eat away at you. My journey to going alcohol-free started with the day I was told that I had 48 hours left to live due to consumption. You may know that too much of anything isn’t good for you, but there’s nothing good about alcohol. It’s a silent killer, perpetuated by society as a fun, lighthearted action. How much about alcohol do you really know? It’s time you cut ties with alcohol for good, because it’ll save your sanity and might just save your life.

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Publisher's Summary
Are you struggling with alcohol addiction? Have you tried to quit, but you haven’t managed to stop?
Well, alcohol addiction is a disease and for you to stop drinking alcohol, you have to embrace the fact that you need help. In this book, I will briefly take you through my journey of alcoholism and how it affected my life. Personally, I had befriended the bottle to the extent that I found it difficult to let go. This friend grew into a monster that I couldn’t control any more. I suffered in the hands of alcoholism as it stole away everything that I had worked hard for including my friends and family. In just a few years, I was at the edge. I had given up on life considering the fact that I had tried to quit drinking, but relapsed over and over again. Friends and family had given up on me. I was a worthless being. My self-esteem was negatively affected as I could not see any good thing about my life.
One thing that I later realized is that I only needed to accept that I needed help for me to begin my journey towards recovery. So, I made a bold step and sought for all the professional help I required. This was the beginning of a successful journey to sobriety.
Following the difficult times that I went through, I have written this book to inform and inspire other addicts out there that they can save themselves from alcohol addiction. This book details vital information that will help you comprehend how alcoholism corrupts your mind and robs you of your humanity. What’s more, you will garner a deeper insight into some of the reasons why people find it difficult to quit.
What you will find inside:
- Why you need to make a life-time decision
- Why is it so hard to quit drinking?
- Causes of alcohol addiction
- How to successful quit drinking alcohol: tips and advice
- Signs to help you realize that you’re an enabler and how to stop
- Detox vs. rehab; choosing the best recovery path
- How to avoid alcohol relapse
- The 30-day no-alcohol challenge

I’ve been sober for a month now
I have been struggling for about 2 years now trying to quit drinking. My research into the AA 12 step program left me knowing that that path was not for me. I didn’t want to live a day at a time with a victim mentality, hoping for help from the man upstairs. I wanted to wrestle this beast to the ground, stomp a mudhole in it, and take back my power and my life. This book taught me to do just that. It was exactly what I needed. I’ve been sober for a month now and I feel like I am in control again. Thank you Sam!

A Complete Tectonic Shift In My Thinking
I won't go into details of my story here. That's personal. Suffice it to say that after many, many years, I was quite worried about my patterns of behavior, wanting to change but unable to do so.
There's something about Sam's book that almost immediately caused a complete shift in my thinking. Even before I was a quarter of the way through the book, I thought, "Man, I can't wait to get started," but I thought I'd finish the book before endeavoring to quit alcohol completely. During that time, having even a beer or a glass of wine was not enjoyable as I observed the obvious effects that I had been ignoring: it didn't actually taste good; I burped a lot; it made me feel wobbly and out of control; my senses were dulled; my thoughts were scattered; I felt lethargic and depressed. And it caused me to ponder and curse my lack of resolve.

This book can change your life!
This book works! I felt as though I had hit rock bottom in my life. Never sleeping, hating who I had become: a "functional" alcoholic mother of two young kids drinking gin straight from the bottle in my closet every evening. This book has given me my freedom.
If you are looking for help, please listen this book. It has given me back the life I want to lead. It is easy to listen, with a balance of narrative and research.

This Changed My Life (Relief at Last)
I have check reviews about this being a great book, but I didn't expect for it to actually work (at least not nearly as well as it has).
I think I was in a place with my relationship with alcohol that this book had an incredibly strong impact on me. I'll give the liminal sections a review or listening the book over a few more times as I continue with my sobriety to further instill certainty. Reversing your unconscious emotions and desires towards alcohol is one sure way to help address any cravings or conflicts you have about abstaining. I'm glad that I don't have to try to avoid drinking or have some exhausting internal conflict, as there simply is no longer any desire to drink. Gaining control of my drinking is the greatest gift I could have asked for, and I am in disbelief at how well this book worked for me.

This reminds me of a half ass book report in JR High. The guy reading the book pauses mid sentence and messes up reading several times. Could have been edited but no production value whatsoever. Very very worthwhile listening
I have listened this book in sections as recommended and thought it was a wonderful book. I listened it to help me understand a problem a family member is having and found it made a huge difference in my own life with regard to alcohol. I cannot explain it, but reading it has changed my life and I did not think I had a problem. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This just works, and that is amazing
I have tried numerous times during my adult life to quit drinking. This book worked, and that amazes me. I listened this book, and after that I've not had a drink. It has really felt easy, no willpower needed, the book is interesting, well-written and it reverses a lifetime of conditioning and that is the highest praise I can give a book. I have listen it twice now and really want to learn the magic behind the "liminal points" in each of the chapters to apply them to other areas of life, as this is truly a game changer.

Open your mind; it works.
I've had a love/hate relationship with alcohol most of my adult life. I've gone ten years without booze, and then been in periods where it seemed I couldn't stop drinking when I wanted to (not in an evening, but overall). Perhaps my problem has been that I've kept it under control, no one other than my wife knows my struggles, I'm very successful and work (I don't drink, typically, during the week), and have not suffered any real health consequences (that I know of!!). So, quitting has always been a matter of "depriving" myself of something that I thought I enjoyed. Just recently, upon the urging of my wife, I quite again. Fearing the seemingly inevitable relapse to drinking on the weekends, harboring this feeling that I was depriving myself of something and wondering how long I could hang on, I stumbled upon this book. Wow. Truly a godsend. Although intellectually I've known all the stuff the book contains, the way that Sam writes, the structure of the book, the repetitive nature (which is by intent and meant to make the lessons sink in), and the positive guidance completely turned my outlook around. I don't feel deprived, I don't feel a craving. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I no longer feel the need/want to drink and, indeed, can picture the rest of my life without it. I plan to keep listening this book over and over again.

Refreshing, modern, and most importantly positive
This book is a refreshing listening, with a modern and real-world approach to quitting a bad habit in the face of overwhelming pressure from advertising and a world where entertainment is associated with alcohol. What struck me most was the reminder of how much joy life once gave prior to the introduction of beer and wine, which replaced the enjoyment with drinking. I would recommend this over the AA Big Book as a very useful tool without the constant hammer over the head about being a selfish, dishonest, and resentful person. This Naked Mind is positive and empowering. I truly enjoyed listening this book.

So glad he shared this with the world
This book changed my life. I was cursed with alcohol addiction and now I feel liberated, free, the curse is broken! I listened to this book properly. So glad she shared this with the world. I felt so much shame and loathing, I felt weak. She helped me reframe my mindset. It helped so much to know why I felt like every day was a struggle - my conscious mind was battling my unconscious mind all day long - how exhausting! I've done 30 days before, but it felt like I was being punished. This time feels different, it feels good to see how much fun I can have without alcohol.

Terrible. Waste of money. Doesn't help, just lists facts. The performance is terrible it continually pauses beiefly mid sentence making it sound like the narrator is having difficulty with the next word. The tone is terrible too. Bass is too high and the accent is offputting sounds like he's singing at times.

This is an amazing and practical book.
This is an amazing and practical book that has changed my life in a profoundly positive way. Not only is it the best book for breaking addiction but also quite possibly the best book for making positive life changes and understanding how your brain works and what holds you back. This is a tremendous self-help book for establishing powerful habits to change your personality to the core and unlock your potential. I would enthusiastically recommend it even to anyone who is not battling addiction, as everyone stands to gain a lot from this book. I've gone through the 30-day plan and am going to do it again no doubt multiple times, not because I give in to addiction (because I won't) but because I want to solidify the lessons learned.

Loved this book and program.
I am using this book along with going to A.A. I have learned so much about myself and my drinking. The action steps at the end of each chapter have been very helpful to the process. I am going along at my own pace, sometimes taking 3-4 days per chapter... I could not do a chapter a day and incorporate the info and action steps into my life

A great book. Highly recommend.
This book and its accompanying pod-casts set me off on the course of sobriety that has literally changed my life. Do not hesitate - if you are looking to bring sobriety into your life - this is fantastic support.

Very Helpful Book
I am working through this book and have found it really helpful. It is practical, the action steps are doable (although some are lengthy and take more than one day to complete), and the companion website is a major benefit. The only reservation I have about the book is that it has stolen a lot of pop psychology and new age techniques and put it into a sort of "compendium" of "solutions." I would have preferred the authors to be a little more original. If you are struggling to eliminate or change a bad habit, however, I would definitely give it a try!

Most Encouraging and Inspiring
Most inspiring and encouraging. Regardless of where someone is in their drinking routine, this book contains information not only to assist people with either curbing or eliminating their drinking habits, but it also has amazing lessons and encouraging words to embrace and strengthen who we are as individuals. Cover to cover, I enjoyed every single lesson.

The reviews for this don't match the book
I got this book because it had all 5 star reviews. I won't bother looking at reviews in future. Some are clearly not for this book. One review says there is humour. There is no humour. The narration lags and sounds like a robot sometimes. The author is a woman called Cathy according to one review for this book?? The chapters being spoken did not match the chapters on the screen. Unimformative. I returned it around chapter 10 (or 14)
