Critic reviews

“A multilayered tale that builds slowly--the use of smells is especially effective--but drives to a shattering climax that honors the traditions of both detective fiction and ghost stories.” —Kirkus Reviews

“A chiller-thriller of immense scariness.” —The Times (UK)

“Genuinely bone chilling, and proves that as well as being the Queen of Icelandic crime fiction, Sigurdardóttir is a generator of fear quite as adroit as such writers as Stephen King.” —The Independent (UK)

Absolutely terrifying web of misfortune

Through most of this story I was completely freaked out. This is my kind of horror. It isn't gory, it isn't sex ridden, it isn't just humans at their worst and it is blissfully not YA. It IS supernatural, roundabout detective, atmospheric, and scary. I loved the way it all weaved together. It is just awesome in every way, story and narration both great. Well worth 2 credits!!

This is a great ghost story

This story is incredible! I loved the interweaving stories and mystery of how things tie. The tone set by the author gives you that good old ghost story feel. Great characters and scenery established from the beginning.

Completely cliche, but I’m saying it: I wanted to find out what happens, but did not want it to end.

Good god...

I’m trying to like this book, but the main characters are insipid. I’m most of the way through, so I don’t know the outcome and thus spoiler alerts are unnecessary, but I’m not sure I can keep listening...out of irritation, not suspense. If ever a set of characters deserved to die it’s these morons. I mean, ok, they are out of their element, but who goes to an isolated island with no means of communication or electricity without at least a backup battery pack?!! And that is but one minor example. They are a trite amalgam of all cheesy horror movie characters. Someone, please, kill them off soon....

Maybe it’s just lost in translation, but I’m really not connecting with this one.

Classic Gothic Ghost Story

A couple and their dear friend set off for a desolate, abandoned village in Iceland, where they have invested in an old \ house. Their plan is to renovate the structure into a bed-and-breakfast for the warmer seasons' visitors. They soon discover, however, that the "bad reputation" the ferry captain spoke of about the house is all too true.

Meanwhile, in more populated Icelandic town, a psychiatrist sets out to investigate the suicide of a woman who bore strange scars on her back. He's also endlessly searching for his son, who disappeared without a trace several years past.

This story is slow to start and difficult to follow in the opening chapters, partially due to an American's unfamiliarity with the strange character and place names. Basically, two tales are told in parallel, gradually converging with horrifying clarity. Avoiding the gore often in modern horror, this author relies instead on the subtlety of Gothic horror, where what is not exactly seen but heard and vividly imagined is scariest of all. Any reader who enjoys a truly creepy ghost story, written with a definite flair for the literary, will definitely enjoy "I Remember You: A Ghost Story."

loved it!

A ghost story with a bonus mystery or is that the other way around. I'm off to watch the movie now.

Painfully slow!

Painfully slow and laden with unnecessary detail that did not serve the plot. Characters were not well developed which made it hard to be invested. Can't fault the narrator she was the only reason I plowed through the story.

Great narration, awful story

The only likeable main character was the dog. I'm sorry I stuck with this story. I kept with it because it came highly recommended from a source I normally trust, and I wanted to see how the storylines would eventually come together. When they finally did, it felt so contrived and cheesey. I felt nothing but annoyance and disgust for the characters, so I didn't care at all when the big secrets and horrors were revealed. I don't think the author ever even described how the characters looked, other than one was very attractive, so I was never even able to picture these vapid people. Could have been better had it just focused on one storyline and built some connection with the characters. I will say the narration was good, and is the reason I'm giving this two stars overall instead of one.

Good god...

The best review I can give is the one that Belinda gave from 11-18-18 - some of the review is hers, and some is mine.
I think all of the positive reviews here are fake.

I’m trying to like this book, but the main characters are insipid. I've finished the book, and the author does not do a good job of explaining the events. This author needs an editor because this book should have been 7-8 hours instead of 11:43. There is an incredible amount of superfluous detail and dialogue between the characters, along with rambling inner monologues. If ever a set of characters deserved to die it’s these morons. I mean, ok, they are out of their element, but who goes to an isolated island with no means of communication or electricity without at least a backup battery pack?!! And that is but one minor example. They are a trite amalgam of all cheesy horror movie characters. Someone, please, kill them off soon.... this book is neither thrilling nor frightening - at best the few moments of fear break up the monotony of the book. Don't do what I did. Pass on this book.
